Cloudy
Morning peeked in from the big windows all around the foyer, near the ceiling. A dim beam of sunlight draped itself over the girl who’d fallen asleep against the banister.
Seraina came down the stairs like a ghost, her feet making no noise at all, they seemed to be hovering just barely above the steps. She came to a stop just by the girl on the stairs, sleeping.
Seraina placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. “Karen, wake up.” She murmured by Karen’s ear. “You fell asleep on the stairs again.”
Karen’s butterfly eyes fluttered open, and she pulled herself up leaning against the banister. At her full height she was almost five inches taller than Seraina.
Seraina’s gray eyes were rock-like in the weak morning sun, her extremely pale face made paler by the deep trenches under her eyes. She was already wearing a pair of battered skinny jeans and a solid gray tunic, but her shoulders turned in, betraying her readiness to her lack of sleep.
“Yeah, looks like I did.” Karen said, her usually strong voice thin and distant, like the light in the room.
“Why do you stay out here all night sometimes?” Asked Seraina, her usually bare tone managing to sound a little concerned.
“Oh, no reason.” Karen said dismissively. “Well, as long as you’re up, it’s time for breakfast. Anything you would like me to make for you?” She asked, turning behind the stairs and going down the hall to the kitchen.
“Um, how about cloud cakes?” Seraina asked shyly. “We haven’t had those in a while.”
Karen only took a moment in consideration before replying “yes, just wake up the shift leaders so they can help me, because those aren’t easy to make quickly on your own.”
“Sure” Seraina exhaled, turning on her heels and racing back to the rooms.
