Ugh. That summed up the way I felt, sticky with dried blood and a thorny crown on my head that kept making me bleed unnecessarily.
I had landed on a familiar red fluffy carpet.
I turned my eyes to where the carpet led... a doorway.
One I hadn't seen too long ago.
Adam on my right was passed out, his forehead sweaty and breathing slow and shallow.
"Seraina? Adam?" A familiar voice asked, full of worry.
I looked up, and Adam's sister stood in the doorway, looking at our state in absolute horror. Well, mostly me, because I was so bloody- but I imagine Adam as well, seeing as he wasn't conscious.
"Hi Eveline" I said.
She made a face like she hadn't expected me to talk.
"Hi Seraina... Hang on." Then she disappeared into her Study.
I only waited about ten second before she came back with a basket of things to patch people up when they get hurt.
The rustle of the basket began again the song that was everything, and soon I was talking over a quiet melody.
I let my head drop back onto the red fluffy carpet.
Then I felt something move on my head.
"Okay Seraina, I'm a bit out of practice, but I'm going to try to get the flowers off your head." She said. I could hear her teeth gritting together softly.
"Okay." I replied, and tried to focus on the song. It was gentle, but had an air of urgency. My heartbeat thudded irregularly, speeding up and slowing down and then fast again. Adam's breathing was the only thing that hadn't changed since we'd fallen back into Eveline's Study.
Suddenly pain filled everything and drowned out the music.
"Okay, I got it. Now try to breathe." Eveline said, "And if it really hurts you can scream- there's no one else in here."
At that something inside me sort of came out and took over things.
I was sitting there on the floor, vocalizing my pain for a long time.
Then Eveline scooped me up in her arms and brought me inside.
I finally stopped and she helped me wash up with a wet washcloth. Soon I looked pretty normal, minus the scars the roses had left behind. Eveline smiled at me, and I smiled back. She had made me feel better.
"Hey Eveline," I said, My normal speaking voice smooth and songlike, "I got my voice. I don't have to worry about running out of time to say something, because my voice doesn't go away."
Eveline's smile lit up her eyes, giving them a blueish look, like they were turning to glass. "That's great!" Eveline cheered, "But how'd you do it?"
I thought back. "I think... It was the fairy."
"Wait... You mean in the Garden of Truth?!" Eveline suddenly looked very worried. Her breathing sped along the music.
"Huh?"
"That garden is a reflection of your emotions, if you got hurt in that garden it's because you wanted to. Because of that these injuries will never heal until you change your mind."
I didn't understand. It was that fairy that did it, not me.
Eveline's face was hard to read, like she was too busy putting up the wall to tell what might be going on.
"How do you know?" I asked.
The look on her face when I asked that made me wish maybe I hadn't.
"I've been there."
