"If you do that again," A voice snarled into my ear like a ferocious beast, "I'll kill you."
I made no sign at all that I'd heard Kei's comment. What I decided was more worthy of my attention was a figure off in the distance. They had suddenly moved, catching my eye.
They had shrunken down into a little dot of the height that they used to be. Somehow their little demonstration pulled at my numb heart, as if I should feel something in response to their struggle.
"Adam..." the roar had subsided to a growl, full of warning.
Without thinking, my hand jerked back in towards me with enough force to knock off a lion, and I fell back into a portal.
I felt myself fall onto a carpet. I turned my head to the side, and found it to be red. I sighed with relief. It had all been a dream. I was back in the old castle foyer, on the floor because that's how I'd fallen asleep. I stood up, and realized that what I'd assumed wasn't the truth.
There was a ghostly quiet about the place, and I was standing in front of a doorway. The red carpet stopped a few inches ahead of my toes, and turned into dark hardwood floors. The walls that I could see from where I stood were all bookshelves, with tables spread out on the floor in a disorderly fashion. Upon the tables there were books, papers, and candles, lighting up the room dimly. It gave it an eerie feeling, not being able to see the ceiling. It was so high that the candlelight couldn't reach it. I took a few silent steps in.
To my left were a pair of big armchairs, facing a lit fireplace. It cast ever-changing shadows across the floor.
"Hello."
I nearly jumped out of my skin. I hadn't thought anyone was there. The armchair with it's back to me in fact had seated someone up until a moment ago.
She had thick black hair that was long. Longer than I'd ever seen anyone have their hair, not even Seraina. Her skin was extremely pale, so much so that even the golden firelight could only manage to cast a brighter glow and light gray shadows. She was tall and thin, like the trees in the Forest of Shadow. Her heavy black clothes hung over her like drapes, and looked much too big for her.
There was something about her that reminded me of someone.
Maybe it was her colorless look.
Maybe it was the shape of her eyes.
Maybe the color of her hair.
The girl looked to be much older than me. She teared up, but made no noise. Her eyes suddenly looked blue. It was like a fire exploding into loud roaring brilliance, the way her eyes lit up.
"Hi." I replied, digging through my memory, feeling a tug from somewhere, but not remembering where to look.
He smile was shy, but warm. I felt like it was familiar, like the creases on the palm of your hand.
"I doubt you remember me, but it's been a while, so I don't blame you," she said.
Then I remembered a teenager with hair like hers, at the top of a hill overlooking a valley full of fog.
I felt my breath catch, like someone had muted my breathing. I stared at her wildly in silence, a small part of me wanting to say something.
Too small to say anything.
My broken heart just exploded on the scene and I lost the feeling. My breath came back like it hadn't stopped in the first place.
Her eyebrows came together, scrunching into a peak. Then she wrapped her arms around me.
"Adam," she sobbed into my shoulder, shaking like a tree in the wind. "I missed you so much."
I stood there, empty horror filling me up. It turned into anger and frustration so quickly it almost knocked me off my feet. My hands pushed her off me.
"I thought you were dead."
"I was here," she said, her eyes suddenly stoning over.
"I thought that you'd left me."
"I didn't mean to. I didn't know."
All I heard was another excuse. She was just like Seraina. PANG! My heart fell to pieces.
"LIAR!" a lion's voice came from deep inside full of hurt.
"This whole time."
Her eyes were so hard and sharp they stung.
"This whole time, I've been stuck in here, looking for you, hoping I might see you again." I heard her stiffen. "Now I'm stuck in here forever!" She howled, bringing a stone fist into my face.
I didn't feel anything.
"I can't believe I missed you! I thought that I would just keep looking for you, but you're different now!" Her voice exploded from her, filling the room up to the ceiling.
She took another step forward.
"I HATE YOU! Look at what you put me through! I've been trying to find you, to get back, for TEN YEARS, and now I'll never leave!" a slate of rock came up and swung my head to my right, making me cheek feel red. " I thought... I thought that what I was looking for was my brother." She said, her voice hurt. "I see now, that little boy died the moment I left him."
She met my eyes. "I guess that makes me a murderer."
