Raindrops, Part 2
She didn't want to do the extra training. It was hard enough already, fighting when she didn't want to be. It was all written in Seraina's face she didn't want to be facing off against Adam. Of the four of them, she was the only one who hadn't found what her aptitude was.
It put her at a disadvantage, but she knew her knives well enough.
Adam hesitated, shuffling his feet."I'M WAITING!" Karen hollered, thrusting the end of her spear at Kei.
With that, Seraina took her chances.
There was no music playing, everything was awkward, confused. Her movements were jerking and robotic, as she swung her knives weakly in Adam's general direction. She couldn't find her beat, there was no music. She couldn't even feel her own heartbeat, which should have been way up by then, only from her nerves.
Adam took his turn, being very gentle as he swung his sword in a perfect arc towards her, tracing a line of shadow just in front of her that quickly vanished.
It was Seraina's turn again, but she didn't move right away. If she didn't do something, Karen would make them stay through breakfast, and she couldn't have Adam without breakfast for her own incompetence. She tapped her foot. She made sure to tap her foot to a familiar rhythm, to ingrain the beat to her ears.
Just like that, the low rumble of the rain on glass, the clashing of Karen and Kei's fight, Adam's nervous shuffles and his faint breathing, all formed a new song, roaring and loud, swelling up inside her, the base she could feel more intense than an earthquake.
She moved so quickly that Adam barely blocked the knives from slicing the tip of his nose off.
Adam quickly recovered, and learned the beat as he went, matching his movements to hers so that they perfectly blocked each other every time, along with the music.
