Adam: Listless
I couldn't feel anything anymore. My own limbs were distant, as if I was a ghost staring down at myself.
"Adam, breakfast." Karen's muffled voice came through the heavy wood. I heard her walk off, the way she had yesterday for dinner when I just hadn't gotten up.
I had knowledge that somewhere I should feel the guilt, but I couldn't even feel my own heartbeat.
What is most painful, I think, is when you realize something when it's too late.
Now all I am is numb from the pain. I know if I try to cope with it, I'll be in so much pain I'd die.
Now for the last day, watching the rain come down outside like nothing else ever has, like rocks being thrown, I have been thinking the same thing over and over.
I love her.
I couldn't explain it to anyone, because no one would ever believe me. Even Karen, and she's been known to hear out Tira, who lies so much that you can assume everything she says is made up. She only lies so that Karen will have to lecture her, though. I can understand she needs to feel someone is taking care of her, because she's six. Everyone in the old castle I sat in would be just as incredulous.
The only thing I knew now about myself that I hadn't before was that I cared about Seraina more than I thought I ever would.
I watched the little droplets of rain sneak down the glass as gravity tugged at them. All the rain reminded me of her, the times I dragged her off that hill, and when we'd get back she'd tell me she could walk on her own, and I would challenge that.
I also remembered how she liked to move to the beat of inaudible music. I loved that, especially when she danced with me. I smiled a little at the memory, but I was quickly reminded that she was gone.
I still couldn't believe that she'd left. It reminded me of when my sister had done the same, before I'd found the old castle.
Eveline was my older sister, who'd only been trying to find the old castle. She'd told me to stay safe, and wandered down the other slope of Seeker's Hill.
That would be the last time I ever saw her, but I hadn't known it at the time.
