Purple.

Sally stares at her reflection on a mirror, her flowing red hair a bright contrast to the purple that was everywhere.

A sickeningly dark purple goo stained the cave walls, dripped from the ceiling, and let out a nauseating stench. Bubbles and particles flowed from the suspicious liquid, bursting and popping when they had only floated up two inches.

Sally looked down and saw her sister, Si, covered with the same purple goo that surrounded the area. Instead of covering her nose or trying to wipe off the goo like Sally was doing, Si was smiling. Smiling at the sickly, disgusting goo that was everywhere.

Si was clutching onto a creature that laid there, unmoving. Upon closer inspection, the creature was a young boy, around Sally's age. His eyes were closed and he, too, was covered in purple goo.

"Sophia!" Sally's mother burst into the room, "Are you okay? Did it work? Did the potion you got from Badboyhalo work?"

Si only smiled wider. Clutching onto the boy, claws extended and digging into the poor human's flesh, Si nodded.

"It worked, Ma!" Si exclaimed, voice building up in excitement, "The humans don't know what's coming for them. I have killed one foolish one now, but soon there will be more. And more. And MORE! The humans will get what was coming for them! For hunting our species for the longest time. Now, we have a weapon that we can use against them!"

Sally looked at her elder sister, terrified. She had never seen her like this. It was as if...she were falling apart into insanity.

Sally couldn't look for much longer as their mother embraced Si, showering her with congratulations, with praise.

Her mother showered her sister with praise for...for killing an innocent human boy.

It was on that day that Sally vowed to never be like her sister and mother.

Sally still remembers the time she first met Wilbur.

While swimming close to shore, Sally saw a young boy with fluffy brown hair skipping along the beach without a care in the world.

He was beautiful.

Sally loved him at first sight. (sappy, ikr?)

Under the guise as a human girl, Sally approached Wilbur. They clicked instantly. They visited human places together, museums, parks, libraries, cafes, but most importantly, the beach.

The beach was where Wilbur and Sally finally confessed their love to each other.

(And where they would later break up.)

Sally finally proclaimed her love for Wilbur to Si, after hiding it from them for three years. Si dragged her by the ear to her mother. Her mother then whipped Sally. Yelling at her for loving a human man.

"A man," her mother shouted, "is welcome to NO merfolk. And you, Sally, need to understand that."

"Why can't you be more like Si, and do what you are supposed to do? Merfolk are supposed to support merfolk. We KILL humans, not LOVE them! Why do you have to be an utter disappointment to the family? You are disgraceful, ugly, and disloyal to the merfolk. I don't know why I kept you in the first place."

'Why can't you be more like Si?' Why can't she be more like Si?

That week, when Sally was given the task to hurt Wilbur as a reparation to the merfolk for being a filthy traitor, Sally accepted. After years of fighting all the tasks given to her, Sally finally gave in. Gave in because of her own jealousy. Gave in because she wanted to be loved by her mother the same way that her sister was. The same way she never was treated.
