Soo yeah, the first book is "A study in scarlet", and is perfect for who wants know more about the beginning of the story, how John meet Sherlock, how Sherlcok make him deductions (however he acount all the books, but in the first he explain how he think), and the first case with boths, but if you don't like very much about this types of books (like me, in the beginning), or you are insecurity if you gonna like, you can read other books with several storys about him, example the book: "The adventures of Sherlock Holmes".

This is not the first book, but tell several stories about him, have books with, three, six, up to twelve, and they are small and intersting stories, they don't tell much things, but for being small, they can leave you entertained and (in my case), you can intersting with more stories about him, or depend the book, because the publishing company can make small books or big books, depends, you need search.
Other options?
Of course! Ever have other options! Have comics, for how wants know more about the story, but like read books very much, or how have kids for read the book, or ohter options, the comics look like more actual and somethimes more intersting, for example: If you can't to imagine where the background he is, or how is the character.
