Chapter Twenty-Five

Something's getting in the way.

Something's just about to break.

I will try to find my place in the diary of Jane.

So tell me how it should be.

"Are you going to continue standing there like the idiot you are, or are you going to invite me in?" She glared at me, tapping her foot as she did so.

"Actually I think I'm going to slam the door in your face and pray to God that you're gone when I open it again."

"You're cute, but you're stupid." She shook her head, the tone she was using the exact same one that Niall used when he was not in a good mood.

"Surely you didn't come all this way to insult me, what do you want Maura?" I sighed, ignoring A.J. pulling on my hand as she rolled her eyes at me.

"I came to see my son and grandson." She bent down to A.J.'s level at that point, a fake smile that honestly made me sick to my stomach. A.J. hid behind me, clutching onto my leg as he peeked at her.

"Last I checked you wanted nothing to do with either." I said bitterly, really not liking the fact that she was here. She was worse than my own mother, and that was saying something.

Although my mum had gotten better.

I wasn't quite sure about Maura.

"Harry? Who is it?" I turned around for a second to see Niall coming down the stairs, Audrey on his hip as Jemma helped Jonah. Maura stood up, her smile still on her damn face as she waved at Niall. I noticed how Niall visibly paled, his grip on Audrey tightening as he caught glimpse of his mother.

"Hello sweetheart." Her voice made everyone cringe, and she took that opportunity to push her way inside.

"Alexander, why don't you go take your siblings outside?" I said, turning to look at the six year old boy who seemed to understand that this wasn't the time to argue. He nodded quickly before heading over to Niall, grabbing Audrey's hand along with Jemma's, and walked out of our sight. Maura now stood in our living room, examining the pictures that hung on the wall. Niall stood as close to me as he could, his hand gripping mine.

"What are you doing here?" He finally asked, his voice tentative.

"Why is that how you always greet me? Do I really need a reason to be here?" She asked, but you could see on her face that she already knew the answer. She reminded me so much of Jimmy that I was honestly terrified at this moment in time.

"Why are you here?" Niall asked again, his voice still tentative though. It was almost as if he was scared of the answer...

"Why do you care?" She retorted, arching her eyebrows.

She was challenging him.

Not a smart move.

You should never challenge Niall on a normal day, let alone when he's pregnant.

Trust me lady.

I know.

"Because you only show up when you want something. You only show up when it's beneficial for you. You don't give a flying f uck about me or my family, so why are you here?! Why are you suddenly trying to ruin everything again?! Haven't you done enough?" Niall sounded desperate, looking at her as if she had all the answers. Of course she didn't.

She just smiled.

"You've always been weak Niall. You've always been the one I was the most disappointed in, and to be quite honest I've tried. I tried to pretend that I care about you and your stupid little family, but I honestly don't. I lost what little love I had for you the day I found out you were the reason why Jimmy killed himself. It's your fault." She sneered, and that was when I had enough.

"Get out." I said coldly, glaring at her.

"Excuse me?"

"I said get out. Get the f uck out of my house and stay the f uck away from us." I said through gritted teeth, glaring at her in hopes that maybe she'd burst into flames.

"I've never liked you. You're the reason why my son isn't my son anymore." She hissed at me as she started to walk out. I opened the door for her, glaring as she walked past me.

"Well to be fair bitch, I've never liked you either." I said before slamming the door shut. I turned to Niall after that, the sight before me breaking my heart. He was trying so hard not to cry.

"I f ucking hate her." He whispered before falling into my arms. I simply held him close, kissing the top of his head as he quietly cried into my chest.

"I know baby... I know." I whispered, wanting nothing more than to make it all go away.

"It wasn't your fault. None of what she said was true Niall, I hope you know that." I said, hoping that maybe he would believe me just the once. He didn't say anything for a few minutes. He pulled away from my embrace, looking up at me with red rimmed eyes. He gave me a small smile, one that really couldn't even be classified as a smile though. He grabbed my hand, intertwining his fingers with mine before he kissed the corner of my mouth.

"Remember how you told me you were scared? Scared that you were going to be like your dad? Well I'm scared too. I'm scared I'm gonna end up like her... and dammit Harry I don't want to be like her." He whispered and then he walked away, leaving me completely speechless.
