Chapter Forty
Maybe I'm a fucking waste
Filling up the empty space
I've been here way too long
"Mummy. I bored." Jemma whined not even an hour after Harry left. I sighed as I looked at her, shaking my head.
"I asked you if you wanted to stay at Uncle Zayn's with A.J."
"I no want to. I go home. But Jo sleep and Audrey too little." Jemma groaned out, throwing her head back as she sighed dramatically.
"You're so much like your father, I swear to god." I said before bending down and picking up the three year old girl. Jemma rolled her eyes at me, crossing her arms over her chest.
"I do not care Mummy. I want to play." Jemma whined, squirming in my arms. I frowned as I started to find it very difficult to hold her. I set her down at that point, earning a glare and pout from the three year old girl.
"Mummy. Up." She whined, pulling at my hand as I refused to pick her up.
"Jemma, stop it." I said, still refusing to pick her up. I started to walk away, trying to ignore the fact that she was starting to throw a fit. She screamed at the top of her lungs when I was no longer in sight and a very loud thud echoed through the house. I walked back into the living room, somewhat scared that she had ended up hurting herself. She was on her back, still screaming as loud as she possibly could.
"Do you need to sit in timeout?" I asked, looking down at her with my hands on my hips. Jemma was still screaming, her eyes clenched shut and her face red. I wasn't a big fan of tantrums, Harry was normally the one who took care of them.
"Alright, naptime for you." I said, picking her up again but she wasn't having any of it. She started to hit my arm, glaring at me as I carried her up to mine and Harry's room. I wasn't going to put her in a room with Jonah, knowing full well she would wake up her brother... that would leave me with two grumpy kids. She was still screaming as I walked into the room and by this point my head was starting to hurt.
"Mummy no." She wailed as I sat her down on the bed.
"You're taking a nap because you're being grumpy. You can come out when you decide to be nice." I told her, walking away. She seemed to understand me and she didn't follow me. I shut the bedroom door, sighing deeply.
"Harry you better be coming home." I whispered to myself, shaking my head as I decided to check on the other two kids. Audrey was still fast asleep in her crib, sucking her thumb. I cooed softly at her before walking into the twins room. I frowned though when I saw both beds were empty.
"Jonah?" I called quietly, looking around the room for the three year old boy. It wasn't like this was an uncommon thing to happen, Jonah often woke up and would hide. He didn't like to be alone, but he didn't know how to get out of his room.
"Jo?" I called again, moving the blankets around and opening the closet. I couldn't find him anywhere in the room, but the door had been closed... He couldn't have gotten out without me seeing him. I still looked all around the 2nd floor, but when I came up empty handed I started to panic. I could feel my heart racing, and I was starting to find it hard to breathe.
"Jonah?! Where are you?!" I called out, running a hand through my hair as I got no answer. My voice echoed through the house, but Jonah was nowhere to be found. I ran downstairs, looking in every room, tearing the house apart as I looked for the three year old boy. When I still came up empty, there was no denying the fact that Jonah wasn't in the house. I grabbed the phone, dialing Liam's number... Maybe I had just forgotten him at their house...
He had to be there.
"Hello?" Liam answered on the first ring before there was a shout of "Dammit Zayn, I told you that sharpie doesn't come off!"
"Is Jonah there?" I asked frantically.
"Um... No. You just left A.J..... Why?" Liam asked, but he still sounded distant.
"He's gone. I can't find him anywhere. Liam, I can't find Jonah." I started to cry, falling completely apart as I actually realized that Jonah wasn't here.
"Do you think Harry might have him?" Liam was now focused on the conversation, concern clear in his voice. I shook my head at first, but then remembered Liam couldn't see me.
"N-No... He hasn't been home all day. I can't find him. I just... He was asleep in his bed not even an hour ago... I put him there myself." I cried, nearly sobbing at this point. I couldn't breathe anymore.
"Deep breaths Niall... You gotta take deep breaths. I'll be there in a few minutes, I want you to call the police okay? Can you do that?" Liam asked me, and I let out a chocked sob.
"Why can't I find him?" I sobbed into the phone, gasping for air. Liam's words fell on deaf ears at that point, the door opening. Harry walked in at that moment, a confused look on his face. He scrunched up his eyebrows when he saw me.
"What's wrong?" He asked, walking over to me in a matter of seconds. I couldn't say anything, falling into his arms without a second thought. He picked up the phone from my hand, but I still couldn't hear anything that he was saying.
All I could focus on was the fact that I couldn't find Jonah...
Why couldn't I find Jonah?
