"What the hell do you mean, she's in the hospital?!"
"Calm down, Bakugo. The mission went sideways."
"Of course it does. Y/n is a f*cking magnet for this shit. What happened?"
"We don't know the full story, and we likely won't until she wakes up... if she wakes up."
"What do you mean 'if she wakes up'?!"
"She suffered severe trauma, and from what I've heard, there was evidence of an unknown drug in her system. That may be why she lost control of the situation so quickly."
The beeping of machines surrounded them. Four people sit stiffly in various stages of thoughtlessness. One on the brink of permanent brain damage; a young pro with limitless potential. Another: A bag of nerves with an angry heart. And two grown men wondering only if her blood is on their hands.
One sighs, scraping his scarred hand through his hair.
"Fuck. How do your parents even afford all this? You've died like four times this semester!" His breath hitched, ruby eyes brimming with tears. He intertwines his hand with hers delicately.
The two pro heroes raise their heads, pausing their train of conversation. They watch the intern sob over his partner, who lay unresponsive and bed-bound.
Best Jeanist hitches, doubling over from the catch in his breath. His hands shake as he presses his face into them.
"Are you okay?" The other asks, his wings twitching impatiently. He claps a hand on his colleague's shoulder.
"They...They're just kids!" Best Jeanist cries, curling further into himself.
Hawks pats his back reassuringly, eyes drifting to the other side of the room. He nods.
"They can't even drive yet! They have to have parent permission to go on school trips! They have curfews!" Jeanist screams, anger permeating his voice.
"No, I can't do it," He shrugs Hawks' hand off his back, springing to his feet. His eyes were wild.
"I can't take it anymore. We train these kids to die. Look, Hawks! Look at her! She's been shot, stabbed, smashed into concrete, burned and disintegrated! SHE'S NOT EVEN 16 YET! I...I'm going to talk to Nezu about this. We need to... We need to do something!" Jeanist paces, all available eyes on him.
"Like what?" Hawks snorts, standing now. "What are we gonna do? Kids are being trained at as young as four, Hakamada. We can't stop the whole world just because one kid-!"
"ONE KID? ONE KID MY FUCKING ASS!" Best Jeanist shrieks. Before anyone can stop him, his arm flies back, elbowing the other hero straight in the jaw. Hawks grunt, hands flying to his jaw.
"Stay away from them," Hawks says, firm calm radiating from his features. He steps in front of the hospital bed, where Bakugou sits, eyes wide in shock at the two heroes. "You're going to go," Hawks continues, "and you're going to take a few days off, until the internships are over. You are not to contact any heroes with interns in their presence. And you will not come back here until I allow it."
Best Jeanist goes red in the face. His shoulders slump and the tears start flowing soundlessly.
"I'm so sorry." He turns, grabbing his phone off of the stiff plastic chair he had once resided on.
"Just go, Tsunagu."
Hakamada slides open the curtain to the room, slumping into the busy afternoon hospital room.
"Sorry 'bout that, kid. He's known little Y/n since she was, well... little. We all have, really." Hawks furls his wins back into place, walking to the opposite side of Y/n's bed. He pulls the bedside chair out, plopping down casually.
"Why? I mean, why does everyone seem to know her?" Bakugou asks softly, slipping his hand from Y/n's and flexing.
Hawks sighs, cracking his neck with his right hand.
"I don't know if I'll tell you everything, but you've seen her like this, so it can't be much worse than that. Maybe. Point is, you're in for a long story, kid. And if she gets word that I spilled the beans-"
"I won't tell a soul." Katsuki's jaw tweaks. He chews at the raw spot on the right inside of his cheek.
"I have to apologize in advance,
"It gets dark, fast."

I would like to say thank you to everyone who has left a comment, vote, or even just clicked and read the description of this book. I have grown so much as a writer since joining Wattpad a few years ago, and most of y'all are so supportive and sweet that it makes my heart squeeze whenever I see that someone enjoyed my book. You have no clue what impact words have on a sad little stranger on the internet!
Thank you all for sticking through my wishy-washy ass behavior!
With more writing vigor than ever,
