Manny POV
"What do you mean you want us to enter a talent show?"
"The Homecoming one. The one the Deltas put on. It's huge, bruh, and we should be in it." Jordan said while they were at the Student Union having lunch between classes. It was the safest place to be sometimes. If they were hiding out in their room, the big brothers knew to find them there.
If they were out in public, they could not harass them much. They may approach them, but they had to keep things undercover. Not that the Big Brothers were straight out hazing them, but they could make them do weird things. Mind games they say, well, his mind was not up for all of that today.
"Doing what?"
Jordan looked at him like he had two heads, getting amped as he talked. "What the hell do you mean, doing what? You sing!"
"Yeah but, I'm not getting on stage by myself and singing."
"Why not? And I'll be up there too."
Manny scrunched his face at him. Since when did he sing? The big brothers found out he could sing and had him sing everything. He didn't mind, they had Jordan dancing all the time and it was hilarious.
"We're singing together?"
"What? Man, no! I can't sing to save my life. I'm the dancer."
"No, no, wait," he said, pushing his food away from him. "You want me to stand up there and sing a song, and you're just up there, dancing?"
"Yes! We pick a song that hypes the crowd, and I'm your hype man."
He shook his head. "No."
"What?"
"You know I only sing gospel songs, I don't know any that you should be dancing to get the crowd hype."
"That's where your roomie comes in. I have the song for you." Jordan whipped out his phone and typed on it for a moment, before starting to play a song he was not familiar with. Jordan was jamming to it, but he looked bewildered. "Manny, come on! You have to know Chris Breezy."
"Who?"
"Chris Brown!" Jordan ran a hand over his hair. "Okay, okay, we can practice, and come up with a routine. Between the two of us, we can be Chris Brown, you with the singing, me with the moves. The ladies will love us."
"Umm, don't you have a girlfriend? I have a girlfriend."
"More, the more better," he said, watching some girls walk by. "Mph!"
"That's not right, dude."
"Hey, it's not like I'm cheating, just looking at them." Jordan put his phone down and cut the music off. "So are you in, bro? If we win, lots of cash."
He did not need any extra money, his parents sent him plenty, but he knew his roommate always needed extra funds. He did enjoy singing and still wanted to do it more professionally, but only if he got over his stage shyness. When he was with his church choir or the school choir, he could blend in with them. Even doing solos, he was never alone.
On stage just him singing, no one behind him, that was different.
After his classes, he stopped by to see Laila.
"Hey!" She came up to him and hugged him and then a kiss. He was so into this girl, just like that. So quickly. He spent all his time with her, and they hid out in her room instead of hanging out in case Brian or Taj saw him out again.
"You busy?"
"Never for you," she said as they sat on her bed. Marketta was not in the room, she had made some other friends and was in so many things, Laila said she barely got to see her sister. Laila was the older sister, but she was the quieter one. She liked being by herself, and he liked that about her.
