Brian POV
He was not much of a stepper, it was not his thing. Last year the Epsilon Upsilon team competed and came in dead last out of six teams. He did not expect they would do any better.
Except now Jordan, the Dance King was the Step Captain. He thought he was DJ from Stomp the Yard the way he had them practicing.
"Practice makes perfect," he would say.
Meanwhile, he had projects out of the wahoo. His buddy Timothy and him stayed in the lab. They had new study partners, dropping Lissa and Sabrina. They both needed to focus, so no hot girls, just two big nerd guys that never got play and stayed in their books.
His perfect GPA was on the line. He received an eighty-five on his last test which was forty percent of his grade. The last time he earned a B on anything was his freshman year in high school and he promised never again. He would not tell his parents about that grade, except tehy both had access to his grades and monitored it more than he did.
"Do I need to drive up there and knock some sense into your head?" his father said to him when he called soon as the grade was posted.
"No, sir."
"Then get it together. Are you partying too much? Drinking? Fucking with all those girls?"
"None of that Dad." Except for Daysha a time or two.
"Don't lie to me. Something is making your grades slip. Is it having J'Nae there because if that is the case-"
"No! It's not that. Just the frat stuff going on, the help hotline, and all my other classes but..." There was no explaining to his father who was a no-excuses type of guy. "I'm back to focusing and I know what I need to do to keep my grades up."
Heck, it was one B on one test! yes, he did not like it much, but he could still pull his A. No extra time hanging out with the guys. Tehy wanted to have long-step practices when he needed to finish projects.
"All I'm saying is, I got this! Why are we running over the same damn thing every night?"
"Because that's what practice is," Jordan said. "Practice makes perfect. You want to win, right?"
"We have no chance in hell," Brian stated.
"Stop with the negative talk lil bro," Taj said to him.
He was frustrated because he would rather be doing schoolwork. His frat brothers did not get it. They were not trying to get into medical school after graduation. Taj changed his major and still was in an easier field than him. He was going to get into any Master's program he wanted. Brian wanted something competitive.
"We only have a few more days of practice, let's just go full out a couple more times and that's it."
He groaned but went ahead with the program. If they did not place in the top three after all this, he definitely would not be on the step team next year and embarrass himself again.
They spent the day before the show critiquing the MAx ladies and vice versa. Their show was incredible. He had never seen anything like it. Beyond the normal step routine, it was a whole performance with costume changes for an eight-minute show. How in the hell did they put that together so fast and perfect it?
He looked to Jordan who was supposed to be a dance genius.
"Why didn't you hook us up like this? Or at least work with Anika to get our show on par?"
"So you wanted me to just copy, huh?"
"At least do something different and unique to stand out. We're going against the ALphas, the Ques, hell even the Kapas come hard."
