Lexi felt her mouth open slightly, still shocked by the direction the conversation was suddenly taking. She had no idea what to say to the man beside her.

Sean, on the other hand, looked very calm and stood there waiting for her to say something.

"Is this a joke?" She asked a little desperate for him to say 'yes'.

"Well, Alexandra, how many boyfriends have you had in the last few years?" Sean's voice was sarcastic, and she did get his point.

The answer was simple: none.

"Some" She lied, looking down at her feet.

"Okay. And how many of them got to met your parents and knew the truth about you and your family?"

There was no answer to that question.

She had dates and not boyfriends, obviously. Lexi couldn't stand the idea that she might put herself and her family in danger if she took a stranger to her flat. She also thought that a good man deserved better than lies and a fake story about her past.

Lexi had no bonds. She was only allowed to develop superficial relationships that would take her out for good drinks, but could never go on a trip together or allow them to take a look on her passport.

"I think I'm exhausted." Lexi suddenly said and got to her feet.

Sean rose up too, helping her with the laptop, her notes and the blanket. She mumbled a soft 'thank you' as they walked through the library door.

They went up the stairs in silence. The house was empty, quiet and dark, the only sound made was their feets on the steps and the rain falling outside.

Lexi was still deep in her own thoughts. She didn't know what to say after Sean's proposal.

As she was a teenage girl, of course she had dreamed about being Sean's girlfriend but she never thought about being his wife or such. And like many women, Lexi didn't want to be proposed by a man in a way that felt more like he was making a business deal.

"Alexandra..." Sean said as they got near Jacqueline's old room.

She stood there, her breath still tight in her chest and feeling a bit shaky.

"Look, I am tired. It was a long day and I can't think about it right now." She said in a low voice.

"I know." Sean answered "You don't have to give me an answer yet. I just want you to try to keep an open mind, Alexandra. I intend to do great and big things. I'll need someone by my side".

"And you think I am the person?" Alexandra asked, confused "We haven't seen each other in eight years, Sean. What makes you think a marriage between us could work?"

"It would have happened, you know" Sean said leaning on the wall "We would be together at some point. People like us don't get the usual sutff: romance, movies and down on one knee. Our parents were fortunate enough to get married to people they learned to respect and love with time."

Lexi didn't dare to say anything. She already knew her parents "love story".

Marian and Finn got married because Finn was an ambitious man and Marian had the resources and network to help him prosper. Alexei and Tatiana got married because her mother would only trust one man: her partner.
