Chapter 5: Soul Mates
The next day at school was uneventful, but I kept a good distance from Alex. Ever since we discussed soul mates the day before and shared our kiss, I’ve felt a bit awkward in his presence; I knew he was my soul mate, but I don’t think he had any idea what we were to each other.
I sat down in my seat for science as Alex walked in and took his seat behind me. He approached me, but I still got that gut feeling that it was awkward between us.
“Hey Destinee.” He said, leaning against my desk. I turned away from him, staring out the window at the cold and cloudy day.
“Hey.” I mumbled in response, sneaking a glance at the clock. I could hear people already beginning to talk about us just standing next to each other.
“What’s wrong?” He asked, genuine concern in his voice. He moved closer to me, taking my shoulders and spinning me around.
I pleaded with my eyes for him to listen to my silent secret; that he was my soul mate, but it would probably scare him away if I just told him out loud.
“Is this about the soul mates?” He asked me, his voice concerned again. I began to nod, before the bell rang and signaled the beginning of class. He planted a light kiss on the top of my head, which stunned me because so many people were watching us; I mean, watching the most popular guy in school kiss the top of the biggest outcast in school’s head was pretty interesting gossip.
All throughout the class, Alex passed notes to my desk and kicked my chair, trying to gain my attention. I just ignored the notes and scooted up my chair to where he couldn’t reach it with his foot.
The class finally ended, the bell sounding and ringing my ears as I speed walked out of the classroom, trying to get away from Alex. Once I thought I was safely out of his sight, I slowed down my walk to a regular speed and continued down the hallway.
Suddenly, I was hauled to a stop by a strong hand, and spun around to face none other than: Alex.
“It’s me, isn’t it?” He asked, hope in his eyes and voice. To my surprise, he was completely calm about it. I was expecting despair and sorrow for himself. He didn’t have to include the question with it; I already knew what he was talking about.
“Yes, Alex. You’re my soul-” I was cut off with his lips planted firmly on mine. He pulled me to him, and for a minute I forgot we were in the school’s hallway, filled with kids stopping and staring at us.
The kiss was filled with passion and desperation, like he had been wanting to kiss me forever. His lips against mine felt right. Butterflies began to flutter in the pit of my stomach as he wound his hands through my chocolate brown hair.
Finally, he released me from the kiss. His warm breath winded around my face caressing my skin and sending shivers down my spine.
“Good. I wouldn’t have it any other way.” He grinned at me, gazing into my eyes. I broke our locked gazes, glancing around at the giant crowd that was surrounding us in the hallway.
“Um… Back of the gym?” I whispered to him. He nodded, and together we bolted down the hallway toward the exit doors, line of people following after us.
“Did we finally lose them?” I asked Alex, breathing deeply from our two runs around the school; a line of kids with millions of questions were chasing us for what seemed like forever!
“I think so; the bell rang about 10 minutes ago.” He told me, pulling me to his side and kissing the top of my head. I smiled at his touch; it always left a tingling sensation on my skin whenever he held me or caressed me.
“Now what?” I asked him, glancing up in his emerald eyes. The eyes I could get lost in every day.
“I want to take you on a date.” He answered. And with that, he grabbed my hand lacing our fingers together and walked us out toward his car.
“That was actually really fun.” I told him, rising up on my tip toes to kiss his cheek.
“I told you it would be.” He said, grinning at me and giving our entwined hands a squeeze. Alex had taken me to an arcade called Ricky & Sons, it was giant. We played almost all of the games and he won me a giant stuffed tiger from the prize room. Afterward we went out to a diner and had a bite to eat. I found out Alex was actually sweet and sensitive, though he could definitely protect me and throw a good punch when he needed to.
“So, about Lexi…” He started, thinking for the right words to say.
“It might be easier for me to find her now, since I can last longer in the Realm now that I found you.” I told him, lightly bumping his shoulder with mine. He nodded, staring up into the sky.
We lay there on the luscious green grass on his front yard, watching the clouds roll by as they blended with the setting sun laminating the landscape.
“How long do you think it’ll take to get her back?” He asked me, his dark emerald gaze moving back to mine.
I shrugged,“Depends. A dream walker probably took her, so if they’re experienced then it could take a few days, a week. If it’s a human, we should be able to find her easily.” He grinned at me, turning on his side and wrapping his arms around my waist.
“Thank you so much. For helping me find my sister.”
I grinned at him.“No problem, as I said before ‘What else do I get to use my power for?’” I told him, chuckling at the end as the memory of the dinner-CIA incident came to mind. We lay there for a long moment in silence, just watching the fluffy clouds move lazily across the skies above us.
“Alex?” I asked him, breaking the silence.
“Hmm?” He answered, lacing his fingers together and clasping them behind his head on the grass.
“Do you want to learn how to dream walk?” I asked him, “I mean you’ll have to learn eventually. You’re my soul mate, and if I ever manage to get trapped in the Realm of Dreams, you’re the only one that will have a strong enough connection to track me down.” I told him, rolling over onto my stomach and watching for a reaction. Inside I desperately hoped he would be thrilled with learning to Dream walk.
“It sounds pretty interesting…” he said to me, rolling over on his side to meet my eyes.
“It’ll also make it easier on me if I had to bring you in to the Realm to get Lexi. Last time she didn’t know who I was, even when I said I was a friend of yours, she wouldn’t let me in.” I explained.
“Yeah, Lexi’s pretty hard to open up. She’s closest to family, I should’ve told you that before you went into the Realm.” He apologized to me, pulling me to his chest. I rolled over so my back was to his abs. We lay there for a while in bliss, enjoying each other’s silent company.
“Tomorrow, I’ll go back in to the realm with you and try to get in to her dream.” I said suddenly; we needed to get a move on finding her or something could happen to her.
“Sounds good.” He responded, contentment clear in his voice. The crickets that hid in the darkness of nightfall slowly began to chirp, coming out from their hiding spots and into the setting sun. Birds were softly cawing from the trees that surrounded the house, and I could feel the last of the sun’s ray warming my skin before it ducked down, leaving us submerged in darkness. The stars above us seemed to flicker on as if someone had flicked a switch, illuminating the darkened sky next to a waning crescent, shining brightly like a silver coin in the night.
Slowly, I drifted off to a dream-filled sleep in the arms of the boy I loved for a second time in my life.
