Chapter 9: Lexi’s Captor
I felt the knife drive into something soft, and I winced just knowing it had cut skin. A loud grunt sounded from behind me; the blade had cut into Morpheus’s bicep. I immediately released the knife from my grasp and tumbled onto the grass, rolling to a stop in front of a tree. Disoriented, I sat there on the ground for a few moments to restore my senses.
Uttering a wild gasp, my hand flew to my side and ran along the length of the blade that was now driven into my rib cage. I held my breath as I gripped the knife that I had to pull out of my ribs, tears brimming my eyes as I yanked at the weapon, slowly but surely pulling it out of my skin and dropping it onto the grass, which was almost bloodied. A sob escaped my lips; the pain was almost unbearable. There was no doubt it had struck more than a couple nerves.
I focused my vision on Morpheus, who was now nearing me, easily closing the distance between us. I sucked in a breath, clutching my side and began to force myself back into my own body and out of my subconscious. I slowly felt myself fading away, back into my own body and thoughts.
I gasped, sitting up in Alex’s bed. Alex was holding me in his arms, his face extremely close to mine. I squeezed my eyes shut, clutching my ribs and letting out a ragged breath.
“I got… Stabbed.” I managed, still clutching my ribs; the pain was the same as it was in the dream, like an iron being pressed to your bare skin, but there was no blood or open wound. Alex’s eyes bulged out of his head and he laid me down on the mattress, gently pushing my head back onto the pillow. He lifted up the hem of my shirt to reveal a very red, horizontal line on my rib cage. Letting my shirt fall back into place, he dashed out of the room for who knows what and thundered down the stairs.
A second later, Joker appeared in the doorway and sat down at the side of the bed, resting his huge head on the side of the mattress next to my arm. I managed a weak smile, patting the dogs head before re-clutching my ribs. The pain was getting worse, like someone continued to drive the blade back into my wound.
“Here, this might help.” Said Alex, dashing through the door and placing an ice bag on my ribs. I pressed the cold bag to my mark; he was right, the ice did help a little.
“Thanks.” I said weakly, pulling myself up into a sitting position. He gently pulled me onto his lap, making sure not to touch or move my ribs.
“So, what happened?” He asked, gazing into my eyes with pure concern and worry. I could feel the care and desperation radiating from his essence, too. I crawled into his crossed legs and rested my head on his shoulder, letting him comfort me while I told him what had happened to me.
“Well, I pushed you into the pond to save you because you aren’t experienced in the Realm, then leapt at Morpheus with the knife and cut him in the arm. I tumbled onto the grass, I was disoriented for a few moments and that was apparently enough time to pull the blade out of his arm and throw it at me.” I explained to him, wincing a bit at the end. He removed my hands from my unopened wound, pressing his hand down on it instead. I leaned forward and kissed the side of his neck for a moment, pulling away and closing my eyes as I began to drift asleep in his lap, his arms wrapped securely around me.
“When will the pain subside?” He asked me, his grip automatically tightening around me for a moment.
“It should vanish by tomorrow morning, but that line will become a scar.” I told him, snuggling into the nook of his neck.
“What about Morpheus…? I mean, why is he evil? I thought the Gods were supposed to be kind, if they even existed…” He asked me, his voice softer, noticing I was trying to fall asleep.
“Well, some gods are good… Did I ever tell you I was adopted?” I asked him, opening my eyes to look up at his face.
“No…” He answered, looking down at me. A mask of confusion was plastered across his features.
“Yeah, I am. Have you ever heard of the Greek God Apollo?” I questioned him, sitting up straighter in his arms.
“Yeah, He was the God of music, medicine, health, fitness, light and truth.” He told me, pulling his arms tighter around me so I was against his chest.
“Yeah, well, he’s my father.” I watched as his eyes bulged from his head, taking in the shock.
“So you’re like a…”
“A Demigod, you could say.” I finished his sentence for him. He nodded stiffly, absorbing the new information.
“There are actually more like me… Fire walkers, Water walkers, Earth walkers, Wind walkers… Anyways, about the Gods. Some are good, for example Apollo is not evil, but Morpheus, Hades, Poseidon, Gaia, and Aeolus are. Rumor has it that our ‘ancestors’ had kept the 5 elemental Gods at bay from taking over the earth, so they are looking to wipe out the entire race of Walkers, which isn’t many. Once the walkers are gone, they’ll take over earth.” I finished, resting my head back on his shoulder.
“So, it’s like our duty to protect the earth now…?” He asked me, doubt in his voice. I just nodded my head and shrugged.
“I guess, but I really don’t see myself doing anything like that in the future.” I felt him nod his head, the muscles near his shoulders flexing a little under my touch. I smiled serenely; at least I had Alex to support me through whatever lies ahead of me.
“What about that star on his wrist he had shown us?” He asked me after a moment, breaking the silence in the room.
“That’s the mark of the Gods, the five points stand for the five elements: water, fire, earth, air and dream.” I responded, stretching my legs out on the mattress in front of me. He nodded his head once more; I internally thanked him for halting the questions for now, that battle in the Realm had finally caught up to me. My eyes began to close and I felt all of the tension in my muscles slowly leave my body as I began to drift off to sleep.
The last thing I felt besides my searing ribs was Alex’s warm lips pressed against my forehead before I drifted off into a gentle, well earned sleep.
