Chapter 4: A Close Call
I stirred from my slumber, feeling around my surroundings; I could tell I wasn’t in Alex’s arms anymore or I would have been able to read his essence. My fingers slipped through the polyester fabric of his comforter.
“DID YOU RAPE HER?!” Shrieked a woman’s voice.
“NO MOM I DID NOT RAPE HER, WHY WOULD I RAPE HER?!” A voice of what sounded like Alex’s shouted back to her.
“Oh, well did you…” She trailed off, though I assumed she meant did we ‘do it’.
“No, mom. We’re working on a school project and she fell asleep.” He answered. The frustration was clear in his voice.
“I didn’t know you were that boring…” The woman’s voice trailed off with a chuckle. Then, I heard footsteps retreating down the other end of the hallway.
Heavy footsteps also neared the doorway; I flipped over onto my side and opened my eyes to see Alex standing in the frame of the door, leaning on either side of the wood.
“Morning, Sleeping Beauty.” He greeted me. I sat up straight in his bed and stretched my arms,
“What time is it?” I asked, straightening out my shirt which had scrunched up to my bellybutton.
“About five in the afternoon.” He told me, checking his alarm clock next to the bed. I nodded to him and leaned my head against the headboard.
“Rape, huh?” I said, chuckling at the end. He shook his head, a smile slipping across his face.
“You heard that?” He asked.
I nodded, also shaking my head.“You have quite the family.”
“Yeah, they’re weird but I love them.” He told me, sitting down on the bed next to Joker who happily wagged his tail.
“So, what happened when you went into the ‘Realm’?” He asked, putting air quotes around the word Realm.
“Well, Joker tracked her essence and found her dream-”
“Kids dinner’s ready!” Called a woman’s voice. He heaved a sigh and rose from his bed. I watched the muscles ripple in his back as he stretched his arms out in front of him. Joker also leapt off of the bed, exiting the room before us. I did the same, stepping ahead of Alex and pausing at the doorframe.
“Wait.” I told him, spinning around and facing him; he was a good foot taller than me. “Closer.” I told him, motioning him to bend down with my finger. “Closer…” Now, we were at eye level. He tucked a strand of my brown hair behind my ear, his breath gently caressing my face. I leant forward, pressing my lips to his for a moment before breaking apart. He stared at me for a long minute, his mesmerizing green eyes boring into my blue. I just chuckled and spun around and exiting the room, heading for the spiraling staircase.
“What was that for?” Alex asked, who had broken free of his little trance and caught up to me on the stairs.
“I told you, you need to practice keeping your feelings about me hidden. It’s easier for me to read essence than thought.” I smirked at him as he turned his gaze away from me and blushed a deep shade of red; boys were way too easy.
“Oh you must be Destinee, correct?” Squealed the woman. She tangled me in a hug, her long bon arms pulling me to her. I awkwardly patted her on the back and pulled away.
“I’m Loraine, Alex’s mother.” She said, grinning at me, “You already know Alex. This is my husband Jonathan, but you can call him John for short.” She told me, gesturing for me to take a seat at the marble dinner table. I gave a slight wave and a hello before taking a seat.
