"Uh oh," Josephine keeps repeating.
"Aunt Josephine, I really wish you would stop saying that," Violet begs.
"Maybe you can think back to a time when you were more fierce and formidable," Y/N says, sitting beside the woman. "I know I didn't know Baudelaire's parents, but they seem amazing, just like you," she unfolds a picture, handing it to Josephine.
"Oh, Y/N! Where did you find this?" Josephine asks, taking the picture.
"In the library," she smiles.
"This was taken at Lucky Smells Lumbermill. I remember it so well. It's not far from here," Josephine examines the photo. "Uh oh," she says suddenly, "and I really do mean it this time."
"What? What's wrong?" Violet asks.
"We are entering the territory of the leeches," Josephine grips onto the boat tightly.
"Didn't you say the leeches are harmless unless you've had something to eat recently?" Klaus asks. "We have eaten anything sense the peppermints at the Anxious Clown restaurant."
"That was at brunch, and it's almost morning now," Violet explains.
"Have you had something to eat recently?" Y/N asks.
Klaus pushes up his glasses and swallows hard when his aunt Josephine doesn't respond, "Aunt Josephine?" the boy pushes.
"Banana," Josephine finally responds. "I had a banana right before you arrived."
The children all glance at each other.
"Uh oh, " Violet says from the back of the boat.
"Well, um, I'm sure there is nothing to worry about. The storm could have scared the leeches away," Y/N tries to reassure Josephine.
"And, we are in a boat. It would be more of a problem if we were in the water, but I doubt the leeches will attack a sailboat," Klaus nods.
"Or not..." Violet looks out at the lake, seeing something in the water race towards them.
The leeches slam into the boat, smashing their way through the sides and bottom.
"We need to sail much, much faster!" Y/N says.
"We can't go faster when there is no wind! Sailing relies on the wind to move us," Violet panics. "We need help, we need to send a signal someway." Violet ties her hair in the ribbon, closing her eyes to concentrate. "Fire alarms! We need to start a fire, and bang on the bucket to create noise."
a"How are we going to start a fire when everything here is wet from the storm?" Y/N asks.
"Her scarf!" Klaus suggests.
Violet grabs the scarf from Aunt Josephine's neck and sits down. "How do we light this?"
"Well, there is the way of using friction, but that can only be done in extremely dry conditions," Klaus tries.
"The scientific principle of the divergence and refraction of light," Y/N says, grabbing a pair of binoculars.
"What?" Violet asks.
"You know when horrible people use a magnifying glass to burn ants?" Klaus explains.
"Yeah, exactly. If I can catch enough light from the lighthouse beam...nevermind. It's a stupid idea and seems unlikely," Y/N stops herself.
"Just try your best," Klaus reassures her.
"It doesn't matter if I try my best, it just matters what happens," Y/N sighs but gets into position regardless.
"Y/N the only reason it won't work is because the angle is wrong. The light just needs to refract off of something else to reach us," Klaus explains.
"But there is nothing else, we are all alone," Violet sighs.
Suddenly the scarf catches on fire.
"You did it," Klaus smiles.
"We did it," Y/N says.
"It's a plane! Lower the sail and help make noise! Y/N, wave that scarf around," Violet rises quickly, shouting at the top of her lungs for help.
Klaus grabs that bucket, beating it with a stick. Y/N waves the scarf around, screaming along with Violet.
"Wait, look! It's the ferry!" Y/N smiles, throwing the lit scarf into the lake.
The ferry pulls up beside the sailboat and lowers its stairs so everyone can get on.
"Oh thank goodness! We don't know how to thank you," Josephine says once everyone is safe.
"I can think of a way," Olaf turns around from the railing, revealing his identity. "Mr. Poe is putting the finishing touches on your adoption papers this very moment," he says as his henchmen grab onto the orphans. "In a few hours, you will be Violet, Klaus, Sunny, and Y/N Sham."
"But once we explain how you forced Josephine into writing that note, Mr. Poe will tear those adoption papers into a thousand pieces," Y/N grits her teeth.
"And who is Mr. Poe going to believe? The owner of a respectable lakeside rental agency, or four runaway pip-squeaks who go around stealing boats?" Olaf smirks.
"We only stole that boat we could retrieve Aunt Josephine so she could explain everything," Klaus says in defense.
"Is this true?" Olaf directs his attention to Josephine. "After all of these years, you were going to betray me? After all the secrets we shared."
"Yes!" Josephine says suddenly. "I was going to betray you, and these four children gave me the courage to do so! I have had enough of you!"
Klaus and Y/N look at each, grinning and surprise on both of their faces.
"Oh really?" Olaf lights a match, lighting his pipe. "Oh well," he pushes Josephine off the boat into the leech infested waters.
"Aunt Josephine!" the children scream, trying to free themselves from the henchmen's grasp.
"Alright, our work here is done," Olaf smiles. "Head back to the dock, now," Olaf grins demands to his henchmen.
The boat floats along the lake, making its way back to the orphan's doom.
Y/N gently takes Klaus's hand, "We'll be okay," she says. "We will figure this out."
Klaus nods his head slightly and is about to say something, but before he can get a word out, Count Olaf's shrewd voice cuts through.
"Everyone off!" he yells as the boat pulls into the dock.
Y/N's hand slowly drops out of Klaus's. He turns to the girl to find her focused on something in the distance.
"Y/N? What are you looking at?" he asks.
She raises the picture she found in Josephine's library up to the sky. Two steam stacks, the same as the ones in the picture, blow smoke into the sky.
"Lucky Smells Lumbermill," Klaus realizes.
"Aunt Josephine said it wasn't far," Violet says, getting a little bit of hope back.
Everyone gets off the boat, greeted by a rather disappointed looking Mr. Poe.
Sunny suddenly leaps out of the grasp of her sister and begins gnawing through Olaf's fake peg leg. Mr. Poe and Olaf bicker with each other about the legitimacy of him being Captain Sham.
"Guys, look," Violet whispers, pointing to a Lucky Smells Lumbermill truck.
"Let's go," Klaus says.
The four children climb into the back of the truck, careful to not be seen. Klaus and Y/N look at each other. She lays her head on his shoulder, allowing herself some rest for the first time since they got to Lake Lachrymose, a place they wish to never visit again.
