The ashes we left behind

Chapter 30

"Did you really think that we would trust you?" Ginny asks.

If Connor had the power, he would have killed me just by the way he's actually staring at me. My lips are starting to tremble. I get up.

"I swear that I have done nothing."

"Liar", Connor spits at me.

He gets up and starts to walk my way. I walk back, slowly.

"Do you want to know how many people you and your little boyfriend killed?"

"I did nothing."

"Do you want to know where Helene is?" The rest of the gang starts to walk my way, too. "She's at the hospital. She can die at any time. Just like half of the Cursed. Don't you have a heart?"

"I swear-

"Where is Hailey?" Ginny cuts me.

"I wish I knew."

"I wish I could kill you with my bare hands."

"You can do it", Connor says. "No mercy."

As Ginny hurries to me, we all hear a noise coming from the stairs. Everybody turns its way. Even Connor and Ginny. As surprised as they all are, I hold my breath.

Adrenaline takes my whole body. A dangerous joy mixed with relief fill my soul. Asher didn't let me down. He came. He came to save him. I take the opportunity to grab the key from Ginny's hand and the dagger from Connor's pocket so fast that they realize it until I have the knife against Ginny's throat.

"You move, I kill", I warn them all.

Now, they don't know who to look at. Mackenzie threateneing to kill their friend or Asher slowly getting down the stairs.

"Get your dirty hands off me", Ginny says, gritting her teeth.

"Hey, Kenny", Asher shouts in amusement. "Look what I found in the old house."

He shows me the gun. "Try to attack me and I'll shoot," he threatens the others.

At present, they're stuck. They can do nothing.

Still threatening to kill Ginny, I walk to the stairs' direction. When I arrive, I'm close to Asher.

"Ready to go, Kenny?"

"Stop calling me Kenny."

"I'll take that for a yes."

He lowers his hand and starts to run to the stairs. I do the same. I leave Ginny be and follow Asher. But the moment I climb the first stair, Ginny beats me hard in the back of the knee. I moan.

"Asher!" I call. He turns to me.

"What?"

"The gun!"

"Oh." He shoots on the roof before pointing the small gun in the gang's direction. It's enough time for me to climb. Although, I'm not quick at all.

The sound of a bullet makes me stop. It's not coming from Asher's gun. It's Connor...

Asher runs to me, grabs my arm and helps me continue climbing the stairs. We try to skip the bullet every time Connor shoots. It's not easy but we make it to the end.
