Chapter 26

After our parents' death, Hailey started to date a guy named Aaron. The day he left destroyed her. She needed him after what happened to our family. And of course, he let her become a disaster just like the city that lays in front of us.

I'm the first to get out of the car. I walk to the main street, followed by Asher.

"Now, tell me what is the matter with the necklace."

I don't take my eyes off a building in ruin surrounded by dead bodies. Asher shakes my left shoulder. "I didn't come here for nothing!"

The guy can really get on my nerves. I turn to him and shout, "I told you it's Hailey's necklace!"

"And? Why do you need it so bad? If you miss her that much you can close your eyes and imagine her hugging, you or some shit like that."

"Are you that dumb?!" I'm really losing my temper. I want to put a knife against his throat. Can't he be a little more understanding?

"Don't fuckin' insult me."

"Stop saying fuckin' every time! It's fuckin' annoying."

"You just said it! Why wouldn't I have the right to, huh?"

"Because you say it too much!"

"And?!"

"And it's annoying."

"So you're saying that I'm annoying?" he asks, ready to explode.

"Exactly. Why? Don't you want to see the truth."

"I already know the truth." What is his problem?

"No you don't!"

"Yes, I do."

"You know the truth?" I ask. "Then tell it to me."

"You don't need to know."

I roll my eyes before walking to God knows where.

"Where the fuck are you going?"

"Where the fuck I want!"

"Fuckin' fuck!"

I turn to him. "Yes! Fuckin' fuck."

"Jesus Christ! I'm going to kill you."

"You already did, Asher. You already did."

He runs to me and takes my arm. I'm forced to stop. "What is the matter with the necklace?"

I hesitate before replying. I don't know if it's a good idea. I promised Hailey not to tell about her necklace to anyone. Maybe Asher is my only chance to find her. He can easily betray me or reject me like Connor did. But I already lost enough.

"The pendant is a key", I start. "It opens something."

"What does it open?"

"I don't know. All she said was that I will need it. And..."

"And what?"

"She told me not to tell it to anyone."

"So why did you tell it to me?" He looks annoyed.

"Are you serious?"

"Yes."

"During all the road you forced me to tell you about it. So here is the answer!"

I continue to walk.

"Where are you going?"

"To the hospital."
