Abuela is standing at the kitchen entrance with her arms crossed, even in the dark I can tell she isn't happy.
"Sorry Abuela, y/n and I were both hungry, we just happened to run into each other, but we were just leaving." Camilo says with a small laugh, he then walks past Abuela, locking eyes with me before he disappears.
"I'm very sorry about waking you Abuela" I say, also moving towards the exit.
"Hold on" She says, "I'm not done talking to you yet"
I stop in my tracks and turn to face her.
"I don't know what happened in the woods" she says, "But I see the way you two look at each other," She points her finger at me, "Don't get any ideas"
Abuela then walks away and heads back up the stairs to her room. I stay like a statue for at least five minutes. I finally breathe and head back to my bed. I lay looking at the ceiling, thinking over Abuela's words. Does she think we like each other? I mean Camilo is cute, and he's funny, and he cares about me... oh no.
And what does she mean by the looks we give each other? Was she talking about at dinner? So we aren't allowed to make eye contact anymore? How long was she standing at the door before saying anything? Why doesn't she want us talking?
Questions fill my brain until I remember, I didn't even get a snack.
I wake up in the morning with bags still under my eyes. My sleep was terrible, I couldn't keep Abuela's words out of my head. Mirabel and I head down to breakfast together, we grab our food and I go to take my seat. That's when I lock eyes with Abuela. I instantly get the memo and turn to Mirabel.
"Hey Mirabel, can we switch seats today?"
"Um yeah sure I guess, why?"
"I uh," Quickly I think of an excuse, "I really want to sit next to Antonio today"
"Ok no problem!" Mirabel says happily
We switch seats and I sit down next to Antonio, who is surrounded by a random assortment of animals. Camilo walks in shortly after, I try to avoid eye contact, but out of the corner of my eye I can see disappointment on his face.
Camilo takes his seat and the family starts eating together, I feel awkward not saying anything so I turn to Antonio,
"So, do you like talking to animals Antonio?"
"Yes I love it!"
"Which type of animal is your favorite?" I ask him
His face falls flat then he leans in close to me and whispers, "I can't answer that, animals are really sensitive and it will hurt their feelings."
"Ahh I understand" I say nodding my head.
I quickly look over at Camilo and see him resting his head in his hand, only pushing his food around, not actually eating it. I frown then glance towards Abuela who is giving me a death stare, I instantly drop my head and stare at my food.
The family finishes breakfast and everyone breaks off around town to do their chores. I don't really have anything to do so Abuela gives Mirabel and I the task of getting the fruits and veggies from the village.
Mirabel and I are walking around making small talk about the people of the town when Luisa comes up to us.
"Hey guys, how's it going?" Luisa says
I answer, "Pretty good"
Luisa pauses for a second, "Um y/n can I talk to you for a second?" She quickly glances at Mirabel, "Alone"
"Uh sure" I smile and hand Mirabel our basket of different foods.
Luisa leads me to an alley way between a set of houses. She peers around both corners before coming closer to me.
"Luisa, is everything ok?" I ask, she seems really paranoid.
Luisa then transforms into Camilo.
"Why did you move seats at breakfast?" He asks, "Did something happen last night?"
I wish I could tell him what Abuela said, but I can't. I don't want to risk being kicked out of the Casita.
"I just wanted to sit next to Antonio, does it really matter that much?"
Camilo reaches for my hand but I quickly pull it away.
He sighs, "I guess it doesn't"
I walk out of the alley and just as I turn back onto the street I quickly glance towards him. His head is dropped low, looking at his feet and he's holding onto his elbows. I feel terrible, but I know it's for the best. He probably isn't even that sad.
I walk back to Mirabel and smile, "Ready to keep going?" I ask
"uh yeah, is everything ok?"
"Yep it's all good"
"What did Luisa want?" She asks
"Just uhh, dating issues" I say, "She wanted to talk about them with someone who she isn't related to"
Mirabel nods and gives me a funny look, but luckily she drops it. I just have to pray that she doesn't say anything to the real Luisa.
We head back to the Casita, and put the things we had bought away in the kitchen in silence. With nothing left to do, I ask Mirabel if I could borrow one of her books to read. Of course she agrees and I pick the one I find most interesting, a romance, then head to the garden to find a nice spot to read.
I take a seat, open the book and begin to read. I'm able to get a couple chapters in before I look up and see Abuela walking my way. I take a deep breath, hoping that she didn't see Camilo and I talking in the alley earlier today.
She takes a seat next to me, "I'm glad that you are listening to my words" She says
I choose my next words carefully, not wanting to say the wrong thing, "Why can't Camilo and I just be friends?" I say, looking down at my book, pretending that I'm still reading.
"I see the way he looks at you when you're not looking y/n" She says in a stern voice, "He doesn't want to just be your friend"
I swallow hard and don't say anything
"I invited you into my home so that you would be safe and have a place to stay," She pauses, "Not so that you can go kissing my grandson"
"I don't know what you're talking about" I say, we never did anything like that.
Abuela stands up, "I would hate for you to not be able to stay here anymore"
She looks me in the eyes and I get shivers down my spine, not the good ones. Then she walks away, back to the Casita.
I take a deep breath as I realize I forgot to breath when talking with her. All hopes of even being friends with Camilo are gone. I sigh and go back to reading my trashy romance book.
After a little while I take a break, I look up from my book to see someone in the distance wearing yellow, walking towards me.
