I quickly turn around to see Camilo towering over me. He then pushes past me and continues walking into the garden.
"Wait!" I shout, jogging after him, "I need to talk to you"
"I don't care what you have to say" he says, "I don't want to hear it"
"Please, lets start over" I say, "We never properly met"
Camilo stops walking and turns around. His arms are crossed and his face is cold.
"I'm y/n" I say, holding my hand out for him to shake it.
"I'm Camilo" He doesn't shake my hand, leaving me to awkwardly drop it. Camilo then turns around and starts walking away from me again.
"No wait please, give me a chance to explain myself"
He's ignoring me now, I don't know how to make him listen.
"I don't expect you to like me" I say, "I just want you to have a real reason, not based off what Isabela said"
I pause and wait for his reaction, he stops walking but his back is still turned. "I want to share my story, but I'm not going to talk to the back of your head" I say before I turn and walk back to the Casita.
Just as I get to the Casita doors, I look back at Camilo, his head is down, looking at his feet. He then looks in my direction and we make eye contact for a split second before I open the doors and head inside.
It's dark now, and the energy I got from my nap is wearing off. I decided to head up to Mirabel and my room, hoping that I can go to sleep before she arrives. I open the door and see Mirabel sitting on my bed.
She stands up and runs to me to give me a hug, "I'm sorry about dinner, I didn't think that's how it would go"
I hug her back, we stay that way for awhile before we break apart and go to sleep.
I wake up to the sun shining in my face, and I go down to the dinning room, almost completely forgetting about the other night. There is food sitting out and it looks as if others have already eaten.
At the table Bruno, Antonio, and Dolores are eating quietly. I take my seat, not knowing if I should start a conversation. Before I can say anything, Isabela walks into the room, but turns around the second she sees me.
Dolores gives me a look, signaling I should go after her, I stand up from my seat, "Isabela wait!" I run out the kitchen leaving my plate at the table. Isabela goes back to her room and I sigh, not knowing whether I should follow her.
I work up my courage and knock on her door, I hear a faint, "Go away" come from inside.
"Can I come in?" I ask, "I just want to talk to you" Suddenly the door opens on it's own and I step inside.
Isabela is sitting on he bed, "Make it quick" she says
I move up closer to her so that I don't have to shout, "You're right" I say, "I shouldn't be trusted, I was a terrible person"
Saying this caught her attention and she perks up on her bed, "Go on"
I take a deep breath, "But everything I did was for my family" I wait to see her reaction, which was nothing, "My family didn't have money, we were always struggling to put food on the table"
I paused, still no reaction, I'm not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing, "We would've been ok, but my mother became very ill, and my father left us, hoping to start a new life" I look at my feet. "My little brother had to stay home and take care of her, leaving me to work for food"
I look back up at Isabela, and she almost looks... sad.
"The only thing, is that I didn't have a job, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get one" I say, "So I started stealing, first little things, like singular apples or loaves of bread, but it wasn't enough. My mother was getting sicker and she needed medicine, I started stealing money, and things from peoples homes to sell"
Isabela stood up from her bed and came closer, still silent.
"It was going ok, but then people started to notice. They would recognize me in town, shoo me out of their shops with brooms, even if I had the money to buy things. My mother was proud that I was supporting the family, but she didn't know how I was doing it."
Tears start filling my eyes, "I never wanted to steal, or lie, or anything! I just loved my family so much, and wanted to help" I fell silent.
Isabela then whispers, "What happened to your family?"
I look her in the eyes, tears streaming down my face, "The people of the village knew where I lived, but they didn't know I had other family" I was barely able to get the words out, "In the middle of the night they sethome on fire, I woke up but didn't have time to save my brother or my mom" I was now fully crying.
I didn't have to finish my story for Isabela to know what happened next, she came up to me and gave me a hug. "I am so sorry" Isabela says, I can tell she is choking back her own tears.
I don't say anything, I know she is sorry, she didn't know and I probably would've done the same thing.
We stay like that for awhile, in comfortable silence, before Isabela speaks again, "I'm excited to have someone here that cares about family just as much as we do" she smiles.
"Though I care for my family" I say, "I only did those things because it was a time of need"
Isabela nods, understanding, "you're not a terrible person" she says, she smiles and we walk out of her room together to go finish our meal.
We walked by Dolores in the hall and she gave us a wink and a smile while passing by.
Isabela and I walk back into the dinning room, both of us laughing and joking about how much of a disaster the other night was when I see Mirabel filling her plate with food.
"Hey Mirabel!" Isabela says, "Last night was so funny when Bruno's rat climbed on y/n's plate"
Isabela and I are dying of laughter when we notice Mirabel transforms into Camilo.
