Song: Run by AwolNation

On the hike back to the dam it's silent. All of us worried for Edmund and how the fuck we're going to make it out of here alive.

I take another step like all the others, but this one hits a buried rock and I grab onto a branch to stop myself from falling. As soon as I touch the bark is like there are a million voices in my head. They all swirl around and I can't make out a single word until they all say one word:

Run!

Without second-guessing, I follow the order and start sprinting. I grab Lucy's hand on the way and drag her with me.

"June, what-?" Susan's question is cut off by a distant howling.

"Run!" I say with urgency.

The others listen and sprint as well. We make it to the dam in under a minute and Mr. Beaver bursts through the door.

"Hurry, Mama!" He urges his wife. "They're after us!"

Mrs. Beaver, who must have heard the howls, has already started packing some bundles of food. Susan and I help her wrap it all up.

"What are you doing?" Peter asks.

"You'll thank me later," Mrs. Beaver speaks as she bustles about. "It's a long journey and Beaver gets pretty cranky when he's hungry."

"I'm cranky now!" Mr. Beaver shouts.

"You think we'll need jam," Susan asks, placing the jar in a third bundle.

"Only if the Witch has toast," Peter snarks back.

Before Susan can snip back at him, we hear the growling and barking of wolves outside the house. The walls shake as they try to dig their way in.

"This way!" Mr. Beaver directs us to a secret door that has a rope leading down to a tunnel. Well, that's handy. I go in last, and before I jump down the hole, I use the rope to tie the door shut. It won't hold long but it'll give us time at least.

I jump down the hole just as I hear the wolves break their way in. The landing is rough but I ignore the shock and run to catch up with the others.

"Badger and I made this," Mr. Beaver explains as we run. "Comes out right near his place."

"You told me it led to your mum's," Mrs. Beaver comments.

Lucy trips over an exposed root and I catch her from behind. Once again, when I grip an exposed root the voices return.

TUNNEL! RUN!

"Shit, they're in the tunnel. Get moving," I push Lucy forward. The others heed my words and move faster.

"How do you know?" Susan asks.

"I just do, now move it."

We run through the tunnel but end up at a dead end.

"You should've brought a map," Mrs. Beaver chastises.

"There wasn't room next to the jam," Mr. Beaver sasses before jumping into a tunnel that leads up.

We all follow behind him, Peter makes sure we all go before he climbs up as well. When we reach the fresh air again, Mr. Beaver and Peter use a barrel to block the hole. They block it by rolling it horizontally to cover the hole by resting there.

What the fuck, that won't slow them down.

I push Peter out of the way and reposition the barrel so I can jam the end into the hole. Once positioned properly I ram into it with my shoulder sealing the opening as tightly as I can. I give it one last shove to make sure it's stuck good.
