Love is a wonderful thing in life. Family is a gift that I'm sure anyone would want. When you're a child, you romanticize the Disney love stories thinking that it'll be exactly like that when you fall in love.
When you fall in love with someone, you fall in love with the second version of them that you've created in your conscious mind. You think that your partner is supposed to protect you from anything that may harm or frighten you. Your partner is supposed to shower you with love and let you be aware that you have them.
Once I fell in love it was perfect, until he started to show me the opposite of love. He showed me the true meaning of fear.
To this day, I haven't been sure what I did so wrong for him to hate me, and give me that treatment but I had learned to accept it. I learned that I had to grow tough skin especially when I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl who I can call mine.
Maybe if I were still in contact with my parents they wouldn't have told me to marry such a psycho-abusive bastard, perhaps they would've told me to go to college to pursue my dreams. Maybe in this very moment, I wouldn't have to be contemplating whether or not I should go wake up my six-year-old daughter to leave this hell hole.
I exhaled deeply as I looked at myself in the mirror, looking at every imperfect flaw on my face. Trying to figure out if going on the run again was a good idea or not, I looked down at my phone and noticed that it was one-thirty in the morning.
I started to make my way to my daughter's room, where she was peacefully sleeping. I opened the door and headed straight to her closet where our suitcases and bags are in.
Grabbing the bags, I set them by the door before rushing over to her bedside trying to wake her up.
"Ellie, wake up it's time to go sweetie." I softly whisper in her ear as she begins to wake up.
"Mommy, what's going on?" She questioned as she sat up in her bed.
"Let's just go, sweetie." I said before picking her up and setting her down, "I don't have time to explain."
She nods her head as she puts on her slippers and walks out of her bedroom.
"Hurry Ellie, Come on!" I whispered as I started grabbing our bags and rushing towards the car.
Ellie follows behind me with her little book bag hanging off her shoulder, "I'm coming mama."
I threw everything in the car and grabbed Ellie by the hand, quickly putting her in the back of the car. She looks up at me with puppy dog eyes, "Mama, I left Blue in the house."
I didn't want to go back in there, but I knew if she left him there she would be heartbroken. She adored that stuffed animal with her whole heart, and I didn't want to crush it. I exhaled deeply and locked all the doors before shutting her door.
"Don't open the doors for anyone, stay put I'll be right back okay?" I tell her in a stern voice before turning around and running back inside the house.
I looked around to see if he was anywhere nearby, but he was nowhere to be seen. I quickly ran upstairs and looked around her room. I see the stuffed animal on her bed, I bend over and grab it but just as I am about to go up I feel something wrap around my neck.
His belt was wrapped around my neck pulling me against his body, as he pulled harder. I tried prying away the belt with no luck.
"You think you can take my daughter and leave me?" He asked while tightening the grip on the belt, making it go tighter against my throat.
I begin to gasp for air as his grip tightens. My vision started to become hazy and I began to see black dots everywhere. I look over and see Ellie's heart-shaped lamp, without hesitation, I grab the lamp and aggressively swing it over his head.
He fell sideways, clutching the side of his bleeding head with his hands as he groaned in pain loudly. In a fit of coughing and gasping for air, I wasted no time and grabbed Blue before running out of the room.
As I make my way towards the stairs, I hear him yelling my name. He was furious. As soon as I make it halfway down the steps, a strong impact hits my back causing me to tumble down the stairs. My head hit the floor hard, but I still managed to get up.
I quickly look back as I see him at the top of the steps, still clutching his head.
"You will fucking pay Reina! You can't leave me!" He screams before running down the stairs.
I waste no time and quickly run out the backdoor, making it to the car. I unlock the door and immediately put the car in drive, I give Ellie the stuffed animal and hit the gas.
I glanced up in my rearview mirror as I pulled out of the driveway seeing him standing in the middle of the driveway screaming. I let out a sigh of relief, before rolling down my window and chucking my phone out of the window.
Two hours later
I pulled into the airport parking lot, putting the car in park I looked back at Ellie who was sound asleep holding onto Blue.
I hate to wake her up but I have to.
I gently caress her cheek causing her to slowly open her eyes, "Mommy where are we?"
"We're going to visit a special someone," I tell her before taking off my seatbelt and getting out of the car.
I opened Ellie's door, helping her get out. I handed her a book bag and stuffed animal before grabbing the rest of our belongings.
Before I left, I managed to collect any cash I could find in the house. Which was easy since I knew where he put all of the cash.
We make our way into the airport, I walk up to the desk as the lady looks up at me with a concerned look.
"Is it possible to have two plane tickets to New York?" I asked the lady.
She nods her head before printing out the tickets, "May I see an ID?."
I grabbed my wallet and showed her my ID. She takes a good look at it before handing it over to me.
"Alright, it'll be nine hundred dollars." She announced before grabbing the tickets from the printer, "Your flight will begin to board shortly, Petra."
I smiled at her before handing her the money and grabbing the tickets. Ellie and I start to make our way to security and our gate.
The flight begins to board, we head to the line. Once we gave our tickets to the flight attendant, we went to our seats.
I let Ellie sit next to the window and I sat beside her. I grabbed our blanket and began to set her up so she could go to sleep.
The flight attendant starts to announce our lift-off and tells everyone to remain seated and put on their seatbelts.
Ellie lays her head on my lap before slowly falling asleep, "Goodnight Mommy."
"Goodnight sweetie." I softly placed a kiss on her forehead as I ran my fingers through her long brown hair.
I wished her life didn't have to end up like this, if anything I wanted her to grow up with a loving father, not one that would scream in her face and throw stuff at her.
My eyes begin to water, I bite my lip to stop before I start to cry. "I'm sorry, I couldn't give you the childhood you deserved."
I take a few minutes to calm myself down, as I let my body relax. I hope that New York will give us good things.
