Y/n's POV

My name is y/n Smith, I'm 20 years old. I live with my mother in a small village, not too far from Birmingham. My mom and I have a great relationship. It was always just the two of us, since my father left when I was very young. He still sends some money monthly for me and we send each other letters once or twice a year, but that's it.

I'm not saying we are extremely poor, I just have been looking for a job recently to help my dear mother. I always help her around the household, cooking, cleaning or with whatever I can to make her life a little less hard. My mom was a cleaner in mainly aristocrat's homes so sometimes she was away for days. She got home in the early hours today.

I woke up around 6 o'clock. As usual I went to get the newspaper from a news-vendor near the small market we had in the village, bought a couple of things, then I went home. I made breakfast for myself and lunch for my mom when she wakes up. I sat down to eat and started to read the newspaper. Most of the news were either boring or I had no interest in what were they talking about.

Then I saw an advertisement. Someone named Mrs. Holmes is looking for a maid in Ferndell Hall. It didn't say anything else, just the address and the job. It got my curiosity up a bit. My mom thaught everything she knew about being a maid to me at home, other than that I had some teachers when I was a child. Nowadays I went to a library nearby to educate myself. My mom never wanted me to marry immediately and give birth to 3 children to a man I could hardly tolerate and have a miserable and boring life.

She's quite a liberal in every way.

Like she could sense me thinking about her "Good Morning darling!" said my mother yawning. "Good Morning mom!" I looked up from the paper, just lost in my thoughts. "What's wrong y/n?" mom asked concerned, I didn't even realise she was talking to me. "Oh sorry mom, I was just thinking about a job advertisement I saw" she was looking at me for further information"What was in the advertisement?" I reread the tiny paragraph of job offer "Someone named Mrs. Holmes is looking for a maid in Ferndell Hall" I explained to her.

"And you want to take it?" I already knew the answer "Well, I think I should give it a try, we need the extra money and I was looking for a job anyways" somehow I got excited just by the thought of working. "If I heard it correctly, our neighbour, John is going to Birmingham later today, you should ask if he could take you to Ferndell Hall" she smiled as she saw how much my eyes lit up. I didn't even wait any longer, went to our neighbour and he would love to take me to Ferndell Hall "At least I will have company on the road" he told me.

I got home, took a bath, but on my prettier light blue dress which hugged my curves perfectly. Brushed my hair and I was just putting on my shoes when I heard John shouting "Y/n, let's get going" I hugged my mom in a hurry "Bye mom, I will be back, I love you!" running out of the door I heard my mom answer "Bye honey, I love you!"

It was quite late when we got to Birmingham so I stayed with John in the city for the night. He rented 2 rooms and I tried to pay him back, but he refused "Y/n, I know you since you were a toddler, you are like a daughter to me" was his reason, which filled my heart with warmth. I hugged him, wished him a good night and we went to our separate rooms. The next morning he took me to Ferndell Hall. I thanked him and I couldn't believe what I saw. It was a huge and beautiful building, almost a manor.

Even though most of the exterior was covered in all kinds of plants, it was magnificent. My hand were slightly shaking, I was a bit scared of the unknown. What if they won't like me? What if I'm not even at the right house? "Oh y/n, could you stop for one second with your overthinking and anxiety? Just knock on the damn door" - as I was telling myself this, like a mantra, I went up to the door and knocked.

"Here we go"

As I was waiting for someone to open it for me, a woman burst out of the door. She was around my age, a bit older perhaps, and her face was showing signs of anger and frustration and her eyes was a bit sad. Was she at the verge of crying? "This is unbelievable. That woman and her audacity waisting my precious time" muttered the, I assume other candidate who applied for the job, while strutting away from the house.

Now I was genuinely scared. The other woman seemed well-groomed, clever and kind at first glance. A perfect nanny from the outside perspective. My whole body started to shake a bit as I felt chills running up and down my spine. This was a bad idea. However, there was no turning back as

1.I don't have a carriage or even a horse to get back home.
2.A woman was standing in the doorway now, looking at me.

"Can I help you, dear?" asked the middle aged woman. She has blonde hair and such a kind face, there's no way that she made that woman almost cry. "I'm looking for Mrs Holmes. If I read it correctly, she put an advert in the newspaper" I might have talked a bit faster than usual. "Oh, perfect, do come in" she let me in and then led me to the living room.

This house was just as breathtaking in the inside as on the outside. Paintings, books, some statues. The huge windows already became my favourite things. "Mrs. Holmes is in the garden with her daughter, she will be here when they finish training. Would you like anything dear? Tea perhaps?" asked me the maid "Yes, a cup of green tea would be nice, thank you so much" she smiled at me and left. Training? For what? As I was looking out of the window, I saw two figures.

Those must be Mrs. Holmes and her daughter.

I have to be honest, Mrs. Holmes looked quite attractive. She is around 40 years old, from my observation. Her long brown locks were in a loose bun, she was wearing a white shirt and a long light pink skirt. Her posture screamed confidence. Her daughter very much resembled her, even though she was only around 6 years old. Both of them got into the same position. Then all of a sudden, Mrs. Holmes took a swing at the little girl, who successfully got out of the punch. So this kind of training was the housekeeper talking about. This place is very confusing and interesting already.

"Here is your tea miss" her kind voice knocked me out of my staring. "Thank you. If you don't mind me asking, do they do this a lot?" I was interested "Yes, it's part of their routine. Now if you excuse me, I have to get back to the kitchen. It was lovely meeting you Ms.-" "Ms. Smith and it was my pleasure Mrs.-" "Mrs. Lane" we chuckled and Mrs. Lane went into the kitchen. As I was drinking my tea a calm and lower feminine voice asked me.

"And who you might be?"
