Hakku dashed through the foliage.

The branches slid easily against his blue, denim aviator suit before flinging back.

Leaves scattered everywhere.

His boots thudded as they dug into the dirt.

A pair of bare feet gently jogged shortly after.

"Hakku? I asked this on the runway. Are you sure this is okay?" Toko called.

"Yes...I'm sure," he half-gasped.

Toko blinked and scanned the empty canopy above them.

The leaves waved down at them while the late afternoon sun smiled between the trunks.

She narrowed her dark orbs.

"We're deep in Birdman territory. They will be far from ecstatic to see two Metas in their home. They'll probably all attack from above when we're least expecting it," she commented.

"If they are here," she added under her breath.

"This is...the shortest route...to the North side," Hakku stated between breaths.

"And how do you know this is North, Captain?"

Hakku dug into one of his suit's chest pockets and pulled out a small object.

Toko jogged to his side and matched his pace.

"A compass? I haven't seen you use that, yet," she commented.

"I normally don't...need it," Hakku stated. "Besides...it's only good...for references."

"What's its strength and steadiness?" Toko wondered.

"Huh?"

"The compass."

"Why does that...matter?"

"Some compasses are weak and floppy. Others are strong and steady. It really depends on how they're made. The former type will lead you in the wrong direction. The latter type is more reliable. But it can't be too rigid. Otherwise you might crash or get stuck at a dead end."

"I can't tell...if you're speaking...words or metaphors."

Toko shrugged.

"It means just what I choose to mean – neither more nor less."

"You didn't...specify the meaning!" Hakku cried.

"It's a quote from an Old Earth human. Lewis Carroll. He was a famous fantasy author."

"Toko, where did you...learn that??"

"Hakku, I told you I read a lot. Did you not see the massive hidden library in Dawsk Island's prison?"

"You mean...the workshop?"

"No! It was a prison, Hakku!!"

"Right, sorry."

CLANG!

The duo immediately stopped in place.

CLANG!

"What was that?!" Hakku wheezed.

CLANG!

"Shh! Listen!" Toko hissed.
