M- "Look I'm just saying, you and Camilo would make a good couple. You guys already get along so well. Besides I see the way you talk to him!--Hi, mamá." I couldn't help but roll my eyes. We walked into the kitchen where Julieta was preparing something. I helped Mirabel put the box of decorations down.J- " Hola niñas. Whoa. Mi vida, you okay? You don't have to overdo it."
M- "I know, Mamá. I just want to do my part like the rest of this family. Besides Karla is helping me." She gestures to me as we start unpacking some of the things from the basket.I smile and wave.
K- "Right but I'm here to make sure you take care of yourself. You can go over the top sometimes."
M- "Wowww dice la niña who almost electrocuted herself trying to turn on some light bulbs." She looked at me with a playful smirk.
K- "Um excuse you, when did this become about me? Also that feels like an oversimplification. It was an experiment to see if I could recreate the the amazing invention of Señores Humphrey Davy and Joseph Swan. Which acuérdate proved to be successful despite some...minor inconveniences. Besides now we don't need candles anymore! " I retorted and leaned against Casita whom immediately pushed me off.
"OW! Casita I didn't mean it like that!" I called out as I rubbed my backside. The only response I got a quick open and shut of a window, signifying an annoyed huff. Yes I speak casita. Out of nowhere Señor Agustin popped in.
A- "They're right, amor. First gift ceremony since yours. A lot of emotions...." I looked up and cringed at the sight. He was covered totalmente in bee stings. Huh maybe Casita got him too. I scowled still salty.
K- "Señora Julieta, I think your husband needs some medical attention." She turns around and throws her hands up. "Ay Agustin."
A- "When me and your tío Félix married into the family, outsiders who had no Gift, never, ever would...surrounded by the exceptional, it was easy to feel...un-ceptional."
K- "UnEXceptional" I corrected while I finished putting the things on the counter.
A- "Yes, unexceptional. I'm just saying I get it."
M- "Okay papi." We were on our way out when Mira was stopped by her mamá. I look over and watch Señor Agustin's hand and nose instantly heal.
J- "Mi amor, if you ever wanna talk..."
M- "We gotta put out the stuff. The house isn't gonna decorate itself." I looked back to see Casita "droop" with sadness. I snicker behind my hand.
M- "Sorry, you could. You look great." Casita then brightens up but not before hitting me in the backside with a door.
"AYE- Mirabel I think your house has it out for me!" She only chuckled in response and I started walking along with her.
J, A- "Corazon, remember! Yeah, remember! You have nothing to prove! You have nothing to prove!" I stopped in my tracks and looked back at them giving them a small smile and thumbs up.
K-"Señora y Señor, no se preocupan. She'll be just fine. I'll make sure of it." They both gave me a smile back. I then scurried along to where Mira was.
I started helping Mira put the candles in front of the doors. Finishing up with the last candle I stand up and see that Mirabel is looking at the pictures of the Madrigals getting their gifts. Lost in thought. Out of the corner of my eye I see Señora Alma heading our way shouting something. Mirabel was startled causing her to stumble back and as a person who has to make spur of the moment decisions, I quickly calculated the amount of force and distance needed to safely move the decoration out of Mirabel's way. I used my foot to slide it behind my legs in one swift motion. Then I steadied Mira. She gave me a grateful look and I gave her a thumbs up.
