"ahh yes another tragic year of high school," ricky groaned, picking his skateboard off the ground. red pulled up next to him and gave him a bright smile.

"come on! junior year, baby! college apps, stark industry field trip, decathlon trip! it's gonna be fun," red exclaimed with excitement in his voice. the two boys headed into the school.

"it's gonna be a big year, that's for sure."

"no, ricky! this is the year everything changes," red exclaimed, "i can feel it."

"you say this every year, big red. and yet here we are again, still the biggest losers at school," ricky honestly told his best friend. red's face fell with annoyance while ricky shrugged his shoulders, "just being honest."

"you mean pessimistic?"

"nothing changed and nothing will ever change," ricky simply said while red rolled his eyes.

"you know what i'm really looking forward to?" ricky asked red, nudging his side. red furrowed his eyebrows in response, "the lego star wars death star set drops tonight. guess how many pieces?"

red's eyes widen, "how many?"

"4,016."

"holy shit," red awed, "we gotta get that."

"i have a guy, don't worry," ricky bragged and gave red a smile of reassurance. they heard chuckling and looked over to see a couple of people laughing at them, one of them being ej caswell.

ricky quickly looked away and forced a smile at red, "we should probably start heading to class...may the force be with you."

"may the force be with you," red answered back. the two nerds did their traditional handshake before parting ways.

ricky quickly ran to his locker, "20-16 was the best year ever & red's birthday is the 7th," ricky sang to himself as he tried to remember his locker combo.

the boy was constantly singing jingles to himself, it helped him remember everything. he loudly hummed the jingle over and over as he stuffed books in his locker.

"kinetic energy is the best start for a morning, meaning i have physics. physical education is next and it makes me feel like shit," ricky sang to himself. he felt someone staring at him and looked up to see nini at her locker, next to him.

"you sing your morning classes to yourself?" the girl asked in a blunt voice.

ricky shrugged his shoulders, "you don't?"

"i don't know, should i?" she plainly asked, closing her locker. the boy shot her a smile.

"maybe you should. might put a smile on your face for once," ricky advised, slinging his backpack over his shoulder.

"hey, i've smiled once."

"mhm, when?"

"that one time you ate shit when you were trying to skateboard down the library stairs," nini challenged back, crossing her arms over her chest.

"don't you gotta go sulk and cry somewhere by now?" ricky asked with a grin on his face.

"don't you gotta get beat up or build some legos by now?"

the two teenagers stared at each other in silence. ricky rolled his eyes but let out a chuckle. they didn't hate each other. this was more of a normal thing between them, ever since middle school. nini was probably the only other person ricky could normally converse with, without having to throw up. it was a miracle from above, ricky always told himself. especially because of how pretty nini was too.
