ricky took a deep breath, calming his nerves as he walked up the steps to nini's building. he rang the doorbell and quickly straightened out his clothes before she could see the nervous boy in disarray. nini let out a nervous breath and smiled to herself as she opened the door. she saw ricky standing there with a cheesy smile and flowers in his hand. they longingly stared at each other with sweet smiles before ricky cleared his throat and handed nini the bouquet of flowers.
"uh these are for you," ricky breathed out. nini held the bouquet in her hand and looked up at ricky with a dreamy smile.
"thank you," nini softly said. ricky grinned from ear to ear and nervously chuckled.
"you uh.. you look great—beautiful," the boy quickly corrected himself, looking up at nini's eyes. he took a deep breath, "you look beautiful, nini."
the girl melted into a small, biting the bottom of her lip. she nodded her head and gave ricky a cheeky grin, "thanks, you clean up pretty nice too... mmm.. you look .. handsome, ricky."
"..thanks!" the boy exclaimed, scratching the back of his head, "should we get going or...?"
"oh, right! yeah yeah," nini quickly said.
ricky made sure to close the door for nini and walk after her down the stairs. they met on the sidewalk and walked alongside each other. they talked. ricky stuttering and fidgeting with his hands and nini being as calm and collected as she could be. their hands would brush against each other's every so often, sending butterflies into their stomachs. they discussed everything: ricky being from brooklyn, nini being from queens, the boy's weird obsession with star wars, nini's weird obsession with jack white and taylor swift, his love for skateboarding, her love for art, differentiating opinions on bananas — it's like they never ran out of topics to talk about it.
"so...i could be totally wrong and already butchering our first date in the first hour but you don't seem like the type of girl who likes expensive, fancy restaurants. you know, the type where we sit in the dark, discuss dried fruit, eat 1 ounce steak, and then spend two hundred dollars," ricky declared. nini let out a chuckle and raised an eyebrow at the boy.
"what type of girl am i then?" nini challenged, crossing her arms over her chest. ricky gave her a proud smile and stepped in front of her.
"close your eyes for me."
"is this the part of the date where you run away and leave me stranded here in central park?"
"how'd you know?" ricky teased, giving her a soft smile.
nini chuckled but gave in. she covered her eyes with her hands. ricky escorted her throughout the park. he saw red and ashlyn making the final touches. they gave ricky a thumbs up as he mouthed a quick 'thank you'. the two red heads ran off before nini could see them.
the boy carefully touched nini's hands and removed them from her eyes. the girl opened her eyes and grew astonished. ricky watched as her jaw dropped and she looked at the scene with admiration and surprise.
nini looked back at ricky with glee, "is this for me?"
ricky nodded his head and shyly smiled, "yeah... i really hope you like it so..."
nini chuckled and nodded her head, "like it? ricky, i love it! ... it's the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me. it's beautiful, truly."
the boy let out a sigh of relief, "well good... cause it's the type of girl you are."
nini titled her head, "huh?"
"sweet and beautiful," he simply answered. nini melted into a smile. the boy felt his cheeks getting hot and he quickly looked away from her. "uh anyways! shall we?"
