"Hey mom, how are you feeling today?" I asked as I sat my backpack down on the sofa after walking in the door.
"Tired.....how was school sweetie" she asked between breathing. My mom was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer a year ago and has been declining ever since. She was in hospice care which she had set up in our home so I could help care for her when the nurses weren't there. Which was fine, we had the room, it wasn't like we lived small by any means. We weren't poor, we weren't rich, we were well off and lived comfortably.
Taking a seat next to her bed I held her hand before answering her question.
"It was good, I got my report card today. All A's" I replied making her smile.
"That's my girl" my mom said before yawning. It was tough seeing her like this, she was a strong women, and young at that. Being 38 years old I never thought I would see my mother like this, I never thought with me being 15 years old that I would be having to take care of her."Honey...." She said looking at me
"Yes mom?" I answered
"I just want you to know that I love you so much and am so proud of you...." With tears beginning to form in my eyes I smiled at her.
"I love you too mama" I replied before she cut me off.
"I need you to do me a favor" she said practically out of breath.
" and what's that?" I said curiously
" I need you to call your father..."
I looked at her for a moment, I know I had a biological father somewhere out there, it takes two to tango so I know he exists but to my knowledge my whole life has always been my mother and I.
"And how do I do that when I have no idea who he is?" I asked with a sigh looking down.
"There's....a phone number in my wallet. That man will tell you everything you need...to know" she replied as she began to fall asleep.
"Mom?" I ask clenching onto her hand but all hers did was soften.
"I love you Lily" she whispered before she completely let go.
"No! Mom!" I said beginning to cry and hugging her.She was gone, my mother had passed away while holding my hand.
After 20 minutes and her nurses coming in, I managed to pull myself together and be the strong girl that she raised. I tried to shake my emotions the best that I could and found her wallet with a phone number in it that read 'Mckagen' on it.
Sitting on the side of my bed I let out a sigh closing my eyes before dialing this Mckagen persons number on my moms phone. It only rang for a couple of seconds before a man answered the line.
"Hey Steph, how are you feeling today?"
"Umm....actually...my name is Lily, I'm Stephanie's daughter...she uh...she passed away today..." I said timidly while holding back tears.
"Oh I am so sorry for your loss" he replied
"Thank you....she told me to call you"
"She did?"
"Yeah...she said you would tell me about my father..." there was silence on the other end but only for a brief moment.
" oh...Lily this might be easier to speak about in person, did you want to meet me for dinner?"
"Sure but where?"
"I think it would be best if we go back to where it all started, can you meet me at Canters Deli?"
"Yeah that's fine, is 6 ok?"
"Yeah sweetie that's fine. Do you have a ride there?"
"Yeah...I'll have our driver Sam bring me over"I hung up the phone and wiped my tears, who was this man and why did I have to meet him? I grabbed my phone from my night stand and added Mckagens number in my phone before I got curious and walked into my mothers study.
Rummaging around I found her photo book from when she moved here to LA. Carefully opening it I flipped through her pictures and saw a lot of photos of her with her girlfriends, at Galas, her waitressing at Canters, then I found more in the back. These were different, these had little dates and notes under them. I smile seeing the candid photos of my mom laughing with Bands and people I did and didn't recognize. The last 5 pages were filled with photos of her surrounded by 5 men at the diner. They're either laughing, hugging, or making faces with names under each one.
Duff was under the blonde, Axl was under the red head, Slash was under the curly black hair, Steven under the shirt blonde, and Izzy being under another brunette. I looked up at the time and saw it was already 5 and I knew with LA traffic it would take time to get where I needed to be.
Sliding back into my white low top converse shoes I began to look in the mirror at my clothes. My high rise blue Levi shorts with my dark olive green fitted cropped t shirt sat still hugging my body. I sighed at how much I looked like my mother, my dark brown hair and olive toned skin but my eyes were not hers. My eyes were a toss between being green and blue while my mothers eyes were brown.I gave up looking at myself for a reason, for an answer. I grabbed my cross body black Michael Kors with my wallet, phone and keys before heading out the door.
