Well, the last place I expected us to end up was on the highway heading to god knows where.
"Where are we going?" I asked curiously as I tried to figure out this destination.
"You'll see..." Jake responded mysteriously as he kept his eyes on the road.
"Come onnnn, please just tell me!" I begged as we had been on the road for almost an hour at that point. He looked over at me and smiled before pulling off the highway into a beach town.
"You brought me to Malibu?" I asked curiously as I looked at him.
"Yupp, what better way to end the first day of school then at the beach" he said parking the car and getting out. I looked at him for a moment quizzically before he opened my door and pulled me from the passenger seat.Walking around on the beach, hand in hand, we talked for hours about the most random things. Music, art, him wanting to work, dreams and aspirations. Literally anything we could think of, we talked about.
"You ready to get going?" He asked as he sat behind me on the ground holding me with his chin on my shoulder.
"I guess" I said with a sigh, standing up.
"Come on, don't be sad! We can come back" he looked down at me, almost as if he was looking straight into my soul. Eyes lighting up and a smile appearing on his face he softly put his hand on my cheek and kissed me.
"Race you to the car?" He asked as he pulled away before we both grinned and took off to the parking lot.
Out of breath and getting to the car first, he complained about me winning while he whined about not being able to breathe.
"You're fine, come on let's go" I said opening my door and climbing in as he did the same.We got back on the highway and headed back home. I reached down in my purse to grab a cigarette and a lighter as 2 Minutes to Midnight by Iron Maiden came on the radio. Turning the volume up to full blast, I light my cigarette as we both sang the lyrics at an unspeakable sound. We occasionally looked back and forth at one another until he turned off on our exit and was stopped at a red light.
"What are you looking at?" I asked him with a smile.
"You" he said looking back at me making me give him a quizzical look.
"Why?" I asked curiously making him laugh.
"Am I not allowed to look at you?" He responded but I had nothing to say in return. I rolled my eyes as the light turned green, pressing the gas to make it through the intersection, music still playing, next thing I knew, all I heard was loud squealing sound. Our car being upside down, I heard nothing but ringing in my ears as my vision was in and out. I looked towards the driver side and when I didn't see Jake, panic began to set in.
Reaching my hand to my waist trying to find the seat buckle, I undid my seatbelt making my body slide to the ground. The ringing in my ears wouldn't stop making me grab my head as I slithered out from the broken window. Scrambling to get to my feet, my legs were shaking as I swayed back and forth, blood covering my head and hands.
"Jake..." I tried calling out as I looked around. Not hearing him respond I yelled out again.
"JAKE!" Before I started coughing, covering my mouth I looked down at my hand once I stopped and saw a small pool of blood in my palm. Beginning to topple over in pain I finally spotting Jake about 15 feet from the car laying down in the middle of the road unconscious. I held onto my right side as I swayed my way over to him with tears in my eyes.
"Babe...Jake...wake up" I said to him as I dropped to my knees next to him on the ground. His breathing was shallow but he was still alive and that's all that mattered to me. My pain finally began to settle in as the sound of sirens raced our direction, but my body couldn't stay awake long enough to see them coming and before I knew it I lost consciousness.
