When we arrived home our sons wanted to take a nap while us adults wanted to pour over the photos of Jacob and Evie/Annie. We did just that as our sons crashed downstairs in the living room.
"We need to be quiet now. We don't want to wake them up." James whispered as we sat at the dining room table and this time looked at the two lovebirds. They were very much in love with each other and their family.
"They're just like us!" I whispered back.
"Yeah! Sort of like Romeo and Juliet!" I said while we looked at them. They had their Grant in the twenties. I'm guessing a year or two after they married. I flipped over the baby picture and the year nineteen twenty two or three was written on faded pencil. It was hard to read.
"Their son was born in the early twenties! He might have some grandkids or great grandkids that are alive." I said, thinking about this guy having a family in during or after World War Two.
"Yeah! I didn't pursue any of that while I was there. I was just interested in finding out more about his parents. If you want, we can see if the Bennett's have family now." James said.
"Well, it would be nice to see if any of them survived after the war. I know many may have died because of World War Two. I know you made it through despite you being held captive by Hydra." I carefully said.
"What I want to know is what happened to Jacob during the war. I may have seen him while I was in the army." He said.
"Oh yes! It would have to be before you fell off the running train and lost your arm." I said.
"Do you see any photos of him in the service? He would have been there in the forties." James asked.
"So far there's none. I think we just have them in the twenties." I said as I rifled through the photos we have of them.
"Well, I do have the others stored away for now. So we're not going to see them until later." He said.
"Did every guy enter the war then?" I asked.
"Pretty much. Only difference was those who were unable to fight or very sickly. They needed a reason to not join the service but every able bodied male went. I'm guessing Jacob would have been in his forties by then." He explained.
"Jacob would have been a dad then. Maybe his son or sons were there too!" I said.
"They could have! Other men may have been in college at the time." He explained. "It wasn't like the Civil War times. They had certain criteria all men must meet and a set cut-off age to get into the service. You needed to be over eighteen." James further explained. "I wish Steve was here. He could tell you stories about the times he tried getting in the army! He would lie about where he was from on the application form." James laughed.
"Can you tell me something about that time that he may not know?" I asked. I was thirsty for information of a time I didn't experience but my grandparents did.
"As you know I wanted to settle down and have a family after I was done. Steve wanted the same. I do know when Steve met Peggy, he told me one time he's going to marry her. When he helped me escape from Zola's camp, he told me more about her and how much he loved her. I was jealous because I didn't have a girlfriend at the time." He explained. "Sometimes I would envision meeting a woman and eventually marrying her. That's what kept me going before my path crossed with Zola, the Red Skull and Hydra. I think the idea of getting out or escaping Hydra was more stronger while being under their control. I despised their hold on me. I didn't like being a prisoner. I felt like I was holding to hope and wanting to survive. Well, I'm rambling on. I need to stop here but you know all this by now!" He described in detail and stopping while he's ahead.
