Chapter One

Luz's POV

I chased after the red cardinal. It  kept twisting and turning in the air, almost as if he didn't want to be put back in his cage.

"Rascal! Come back! If Hunter finds out you got out he's going to kill me!" I shouted.

My footsteps thundered off the walls. Rascal's tweets also bounced off the walls. I leaped forward at the bird. My fingers grabbed a hold of one of his feathers before it popped off causing my to faceplant right on the chilling white marble floor. My lifted my head.

"Ugh." I shook my head and stood up. "Come back!" I regained my balance and continued the chase. "RASCAL!"

We were reaching the corner to the stair well, if he made it there I would never get him back!

"RASCAL! WAIT!"

Suddenly, in a fluttering of a few red feathers and white sheets, I could see my sister holding on to a sheet where a fuzzy bit of red could be seen through the white silky sheets. I let out a big gasp of fresh air.

"Vee-" I gasped some air, "You're a life saver." I let out a sigh.

Vee narrowed her eyes. "Maybe if you hadn't let Rascal out, this wouldn't have been an issue." She grumbled.

I shrugged. "As long as Hunter doesn't find out I'll be fine."

"If Hunter doesn't find out what?"

Both me and Vee let out a yelp of shock and turned to face our older brother. The light made his blonde hair almost golden.

"Hermana, ¿qué hiciste?" He narrowed his magenta eyes as he spoke.

I smiled nervously quickly moving to stand in front of Vee, who was still holding Rascal in the sheets. "¡Oh! ¡Mi querido hermano!" I laughed nervously. "Wha. What are you doing here!" I thought you and Mom had a meeting with the Blight's."

Hunter crossed his arms. "Victoria let Rascal go." He grumbled.

Victoria, or Vee, let the sheets off of the now calm Rascal. The cardinal flew straight to his owner, landing neatly on Hunter's finger. Hunter used his other hand to gently scratch Rascal's head. "Hey Rascal." he cooed.

I glanced a Vee. "He never treats us like that." Vee muttered.

Hunter looked at us and rolled his eyes. "That's because he's not annoying like you two... Luz more than Victoria."

I stared at him. "Hey! I'll have you know I'm not annoying." I looked at Vee. "Right!"

"Welllll." She glanced away.

I stared at her, jaw dropped. "Wow I feel so loved." I grumbled. "Now. seriously Hunter, what are you doing here? Mom said you and her had a meeting with the Blights."

"Well I was, but me and mom have to meet with Uncle Belos. Which is why you're going instead." He pointed at me.

I paused. "I. What?"

Hunter stuffed his free hand in his vest pocket while Rascal fluttered to his shoulder, allowing him to stick his other hand in his pocket. "Victoria was supposed to tell you."

Vee paused. "Oh yeah! I got distracted with catching Rascal."

Hunter let out a frustrated sigh. "Whatever." He put his finger out for Rascal. Once Rascal was on his finger, he passed the cardinal to Vee. "Vee can you put Rascal up? It's bad I can't trust my twenty-two year old sister to put him up without loosing him."

"Whatever!" I snapped.

"¡HIJA! ¡HIJO! STOP ARGUING THIS INSTANT!" All three of us let out a soft gasp as our mother yelled.
