Narcissa and Lucius stood up when Draco and I enter the living room, both of them looking at me. One smiling at me and the other looking at me strictly. His mother is looking at me through glossy eyes. Well, almost glossy eyes. She was holding them back but I could tell she was on the verge of tears.
"Hi..." I say quietly, very shyly. Draco had to do a double take when he heard how soft my voice went. How timid I became.
The truth is, I didn't expect her to look at me like that. I was expecting them to be cold towards me because I was told my father didn't get along with his family.
"You-" Narcissa began but stopped, taking a step closer to me. "You look like your father."
"I'll take that as a compliment," I say to her. Apparently finding my courage. Or at least some of it.
"I'm Narcissa, your aunt." She says, reaching her hand out for me to shake it. A very muggle thing to do. I didn't know anyone from Draco's world would know how to shake hands. Narcissa must've sensed what I was thinking because she continues, "we heard that you grew up around muggles so this is my way of trying to make this easier."
I smile genuinely to her as I reach over and shake her hand.
"It's nice to meet you," I say to her. "My name is Cameron."
Lucius scowls when I introduce myself and honestly, that's the behaviour I expected from the both of them. The whole 'I want nothing to do with you' thing. It's really surprising to me that Narcissa is this... open. This vulnerable.
"This is my husband Lucius," Narcissa says, sending Lucius a pointed look which Draco and I didn't miss. He glares at her some more but then turns to me and nods his head to acknowledge me.
"Not a big talker, are we?" I sarcastically ask him. I notice Draco tense up beside me and Lucius' eyes go dark but... I don't really care. He's being rude so I can be rude back.
"I have nothing to say to you. Why are you even here? We have nothing for you. We don't want you. You're a blood traitor who lived with muggles and is close with that wer-"
"I don't want or need anything from you," I jump in and cut him off before Lucius tells Draco that Remus is a werewolf. Although, maybe he already knows. I don't care, I'm still not allowing him to speak about him badly. "Draco wanted to introduce me to you guys and I thought it would be nice to meet someone related. Obviously, you don't want anything to do with me and that's fine. I expected nothing less. I've been doing fine on my own so far."
I hear Draco sigh beside me and I don't even bother looking at Narcissa. I didn't mean to hurt her or upset her but his attitude pissed me off.
"Maybe you're right, maybe you have been on your own for a long time and have done just fine. Your a lot like your father like that. He's very independent. Likes to do his own thing," Narcissa began. Her voice calm and gentle. "But you're.. what 13?"
I nod my head in response.
"You should not have to be on your own and I understand that you have Remus, but we're also here for you. Despite what my husband says or how he acts."
Yeah, there here for me now because how do you tell a child that they're not wanted to their face? Where were they when I was being thrown in and out of foster homes? Toxic foster homes. Where were they on the nights that I stayed up crying because I couldn't imagine why my own family would allow me to go through this. Any of it... if they had a home. I couldn't understand why they would rather me be here than with them.
"I... appreciate that but like I said, I've been doing just fine on my own," I say stubbornly. The girl I am now is screaming at myself to let them in but that young girl who was thinking all of that is screaming to shut them out like they did to me. Apparently that side is winning right now.
