Noah
June
~~~
Six whole months. That's how long he's been without her.
He's surprised he's still alive, or rather, he's surprised he hasn't lost his mind already.
Or maybe he has, because he still feels the pain of that very first day she told him to go away. Shouldn't he be over it by now? He can feel people getting tired of his downer moods.
And maybe he should be over it by now.
It's not that they didn't care about each other, no, they did care about each other. But they were held back by something unspoken to each other. It's not that they didn't want to make it work.
They did, but she had this fear of not being good enough and losing him.
You see, they cared about one another but were too oblivious to realize that they both wanted the same thing.
She's important to him. If there's anything that will last forever, it's that. Whether they separate, stay in touch or rarely speak again, she'll always be that little someone he really cares for, the little someone that he would sacrifice everything for to protect and keep safe.
He walks down the street, checking the list of books he needed to pick up at their local bookstore.
Right as he was turning, he bumped into someone just as they were turning the other corner.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry... I didn't mean to. I should watch where I'm--" He pauses his apology when he sees who he just bumped into.
She's staring back at him, shocked that they just ran into each other, and partly frozen.
"Dix." Noah says, awkwardly coughing. "Sorry, I should really watch where I'm going."
Dixie shakes her head. "No, it's okay. I should watch where I'm going too."
They stand there in awkward silence, both wanting to say more, but holding back out of fear.
He couldn't help but wonder, how did they get like this? They used to be able to talk about anything with each other. Anything and everything. But now... Here they are, standing awkwardly in front of each other, not saying anything.
"Well.. I should really be going. I have to pick up Charli." Dixie says, referring to her little sister who just became a freshman in high school.
"Uh, yeah, I have to pick up some books from Easton's." Noah nervously says, as they pass by each other in the directions they're going. "Tell Char I said hi."
She nods. "I will. See you, Noah."
And with that, she's gone. He wants to run after her, take her hand and beg her to stay.
But instead, he just nods and walks off towards Easton's Books.
