Stuck In a Nightmare

My heart raced as I cracked open the seal wrapped around the crisp rectangular package. I guided my fingers carefully around the disk held inside, careful not to smudge the side that held data that could possibly change my life.

I looked in anticipation at the console sitting on my twin sized bed. It was like a helmet, almost, except with wires protruding from the sides like colorful dreadlocks. I expertly found the panel on the console, popped it open, and slid in the disk. The panel shut with a hissing sound, and I could hear the disk whirring inside, waiting for me to say the words that would bring this new world to life.

I know it all sounds a bit dramatic, and it is, but gaming was my life. My passion. This disk held the data for an online game unlike any other. It took your entire body into the game. You could be transformed into the character who before you could see only on a screen. When I heard about this... Miracle of gaming, I had to have it. And today, the servers finally go online.

I slid on the helmet, taking in deep breaths. My long blonde hair crowded the inside of the console, making me feel awkwardly claustrophobic. I waved off the feeling, knowing soon I would only feel the rush of adrenaline from killing a monster.

The clock at the edge of my vision flicked to 12:00 a.m., and I let a little smirk grace my lips before I became immersed in a digital world.

"Link Start!" I whispered, knowing everyone around me would be asleep at this hour.

Immediately, a pure white light filled my vision. Specks of color flickered across the otherwise spotless landscape.

"Welcome to Sword Art Online!" The voice in my console blasted in my ears. A chorus began to play, but soon faded away, until all I saw was the landscape before me.

It all felt so... Real.
