After a week, Matilda was able to return back home. However, I guess her bad luck just kept on coming, as the day after that, she got the Omicron Variant of Covid 19, the one less fatal than the Delta Variant. I guess that's lucky for her in a way... But even having Covid 19, she still had to take part in online lessons. Dave and Jay weren't that...how can I say this...affected by Matilda's absence. Dave was happy that he could have a nice break on the insults Matilda kept hurling at him, and Jay had started to get slightly agitated with 'Be like Jay and you'll go further in life' quote, and with Matilda absent he could stop hearing for a little while. I guess he didn't like how Dave was forced to do things that he didn't want to do, or maybe he just didn't really like being the centre of attention... Anyways, I as the author, cannot know their thoughts. (Well pretend I can't because I come up with their thoughts).
Others in their class were also pleased with Matilda's absence. Mainly Theodore, as finally he wouldn't get his daily kick in the shin for two weeks. Mr Neil, in fact, was also pretty pleased with this. He had enough with the arguments that kept brewing in his classroom due to Matilda, (Read the daily stories, you'll know about them then) and finally he would be over it for a few weeks. Miss Marie was also fairly alright about this, as she would would finally not have to raise her voice to stop Matilda from reading during an assembly, I guess that's saving her vocal chords some work. Nigel was delighted with Matilda's absence, he could finally get away with anything he wanted to do, after all, he was the main trouble maker in the class, and with Matilda always on his tail ready to tell him off at any given moment, it was a true relief to be free from this stalking feeling. Angel was also very happy with this. In one of her seating plans she sat next to Matilda, who wasn't very sociable with her at all. She never spoke at all to her in lesson, not even in partner work. In her words she gave off a very 'negative aura' and it was nice to be away from her for a while, and plus, she would finally get to talk to someone who was amiable during lesson. Jessica was very content with this. After a large argument between the two, Jessica was better off never to see her ever again. I guess 2 weeks was better than nothing for her.
And for various other reasons, Matilda's absence was a great thing.
It was during a French Lesson. Matilda was on the Teams meeting (or like Zoom or whatever...) and everyone else was in class. Mr Neil instructed the class to translate a passage in French. He then went around the class, sentence by sentence, to read out their translations. But then, he decided to pick on Matilda.
'Matilda can you translate the sentence 'Heir soir, j'ai regarde un film mais mon frere, il n'a pas regarde le film parce que il a joue au foot'?'
(Basically it means, 'Yesterday night, I watched a film, but my brother, he didn't watch the film, because he was playing football')
'Now comes the moment of truth...' Jay whispered. 'Is Matilda really on the call?
Matilda turned her microphone on.
'Sorry Sir, I couldn't really hear you, could you repeat that?' Matilda requested.
And so, Mr Neil repeated the question.
There was silence for a minute, I guess Matilda wasn't too good at translating French.
Matilda then unmuted her mic, there were a few ruffling sounds, and then she muted again, as if she said something but was muffled out, as if the Wi-Fi was bad or something.
That's the thing about virtual meetings. When the teacher asks you a question, you could simply leave the meeting and say it was due to Wi-fi. Or maybe you could use the excuse that your mic doesn't work, and you can't access the chat. The excuses are limitless.
But I guess Mr Neil decided to fall for Matilda's tricks as he said 'Matilda, we can't hear you properly, could you say that again?'
Matilda said nothing, and she left the meeting.
'Well that's something...' Jay murmured.
'I guess Matilda isn't too good at French' Dave said. 'I'm finally better than her at something!!'
'I guess you're better than me as well....' Jay muttered.
'Let's see if you can translate this, then we'll know who's better at French! Here we go...!' Dave shouted. 'J'ai raté mon seul train, et j'ai raté le bus qui est arrivé, et j'ai oublié de faire mes devoirs qui étaient dus aujourd'hui et j'espère vraiment que le professeur ne le remarquera pas, après tout, je jouais à Geometric Run au lieu de faire mes devoirs...'
Jay just stared at him open-mouthed utterly confused. (You know what, I'm confused as well, translate it in Google Translate...)
'What's wrong, Jay?'
'Did you memorize that or did you come up with that on the spot?'
'I just came up with it now, why do you ask?'
'Never mind...'
Then, a message appeared in the chat. It said: 'Sorry Sir, it won't let me re-join the meeting...'
'Well that's so convenient now, isn't it?' Dave asked. 'And exactly when Sir asked her a question as well!'
'Wait...did you just...?'
'Do what?'
'Did you just mock Matilda?'
'I...guess I did! The turns have tabled!'
'You mean the tables have turned?'
'Yeah...what you said! The turns have tabled!'
Jay sighed and shook his head, how stupid Dave was sometimes...
THE END
Yes, online meetings always worked this way. Fake excuses and what-not. Yes, this reminds me of those lockdown days... Anyways, please leave a vote, it really helps!
