Miami, Florida

Summer of 1983

The summer back then used to be so warm, you would think that the sun was lived here.

it happened that year.

That summer.

Summer of 1983.

That was when Michael had his Thriller album playing everywhere.

That was also when I saw her.

That...reluctant lady.

At the gas station, out of all places, is where you would meet celebrities, models, upcoming stars, or even try making a name for yourself with just $15. It was simple.

I worked at that gas station too. yup, the clumsy cashier and mopping boy. I have waves now but back then...I had a high-top fade. you know the bobby brown fade? yeah, I had that.

One day while I was mopping the floor as I usually do, then I saw her. The Reluctant Lady.

She was getting a Pepsi-coke, a bag of chips, and some jujubes. There wasn't anyone at the register when she was there.

"Umm..you work?", she said causing me to turn my head around towards her.

She was darkskin, about like 5'6-5'8, flashy, and had Jheri curls. I was staring at her because damn...ion saw anybody like her before.

"Hello? Do you work here? I'm just tryna grab and go, y'know?", she said.

I snapped out of my head and sped to the register.

"My bad, my bad. I didn't mean to stare. Yeah, I-I work here. I usually work here.", I said.

She chuckled and said, "Okay, you work here...but I've never seen you before. Are you new?"

"Yeah..I started about two weeks ago. Just mopping and registering.", I said.

"Ahh...that's why I have never seen you before. Usually Big John greets me but I'm guessing he's out today, huh?", she said.

"Oh no, he's out there talking with some women from the club. He's just on his break, while I'm still in charge.", I boasted.

"Oh really?", she said jokingly while chuckling again.

"How much is it?", she asked.

"It's on the house. You'll have to pay me next time.", I said.

She smiled at me and her eyes smiled as well.

"It says $2.75. Here.", she said while giving me a $10.

I was stunned to speak.

"You deserve the change since you're funny and cute. By the way, my name's Ronnie.", she said as she was grabbing her things to go.

"I-I..I'm Denzel.", I said.

"Well see you later Denzel.", Ronnie said leaving the store.

"Bye...Ronnie.", I said.

Ronnie. That's a pretty name.
