“What?” Deck hissed, all of his previous anger returning. Now that all of my own anger had dissipated, I was hyper aware of the fact that almost every set of eyes in the cafeteria had their eyes focused on me. I gulped.
“Uh, okay,” I said. Jack shot up from his crouch, wrapping me in a hug and spinning me around. Everyone started clapping, and it felt like a scene out of a movie. If this is a movie, then I think I’m in the wrong one, I couldn’t help but think. I would never star in a cheesy romantic movie. It was so… opposite to my personality. Jack’s football friends started whooping and hollering, congratulating him on finding a date.
“Does this mean you and Jack are dating? What about you and Deck?” An anchor asked, shoving a microphone in my face. Where the Hell did you come from? I wanted to ask.
“I’m not dating Deck,” I laughed, thinking of all of the girls who surrounded him on a daily basis. I’d be on the most wanted list within a day!
“Why not? You guys sure looked totally in love in the picture on the news from the other day,” the anchor persisted.
“Maybe because girls surround him on a daily basis? He gets more girls than Channing Tatum. I would have more girls trying to kill me than I could count,” I said. I figured I could up his reputation a little bit. It couldn’t hurt, right?
“You’re going to let that stop you from finding your true love?” The anchor inquired.
“Deck… Deck is special. He deserves someone better than me,” I said quietly, and I meant it. He didn’t want someone broken, like me. He deserved a gorgeous, funny girl, who liked the same music as him. He deserved someone so much better than me. I looked around quickly, trying to make sure Jack hadn’t heard. Luckily, he was still busy fooling around with his friends.
“That’s a wrap!” the anchor cheered. But where was Deck?
“Have you seen Deck?” I asked the anchor as she was wrapping up her microphone.
“Didn’t you see? Deck stormed out of the cafeteria a couple minutes ago. He shoved against the glass door so hard it rattled in its frame!” the anchor said. That was all she needed to say. I took off after him. I didn’t want him to do anything stupid.
He had a lot of distance, but he was only walking. When he didn’t turn around, I ran faster, my lungs screaming in protest.
“HEY!” I yelled at the top of my lungs. It was a line from the movie we had just seen. Deck turned around, but he didn’t smile. His eyes were a coal black color, and his lips were pressed in a thin line. My chest depressed hugely. It hurt to see him this way.
“What the Hell was that about!?” He thundered.
“What did you expect me to say? He asked me out in front of the entire school!” I retorted. He of all people should have known that I was afraid of attention. Deck took a threatening step closer to me, his eyes silently accusing me of committing the worst crime possible- betrayal.
“How about NO!” Deck yelled. Why did he care so much? He knew that I didn’t like Jack romantically, but why was he so pissed off? I felt horrible for making him feel like shit. I didn’t know what I did, but I wanted to fix whatever it was.
“Deck, can we stop yelling? I’m tired of being mad at you. Let’s just talk about this,” I begged.
“No! Fuck you! Why should I trust you!? You’re just going to go run off with Jack when I’m done talking to you!” He thundered. My mouth literally dropped open.
