Aviaries make me nervous

Zoos were never a part of my childhood
Cages and trapped animals make my mother serious
Make her feel more than she'd like to
Make her explain more than she needs too
She too has always been a trapped animal
Inside the mirror vase of my grandfather's promises
She swore
The she'd never become a person like that
But sometimes
When she gets really angry
She opens up the cage
And pulls out the key
