Casita, home of the great Madrigals, boasted about by any villager lucky enough to see inside. Everyone talks of this house - brought to life with magic or the love of the family inside, no one knows - with such conviction of its greatness that you could never disagree. I was one of the lucky few to have been inside Casita but better yet, I had the privilege of being the first outsider to ever stay overnight.
The magnificent building loomed above me casting its bright colors onto my specimen. It was just after dinner and as arranged, I was waiting outside Casita with my belongings on my back, eager to see a curly-haired girl appear from the door.
I knocked twice, rapping my knuckles on the smooth, blue wood, by the time my fist tried to connect with the door for the third time, it opened and my face popped out.
"Hola! Lovely to see you on this fine evening." I froze on the spot remembering what abuela told me, as the replica of me grasped my hand in both of theirs's and firmly shook it while they shifted into Mirabel, "Let me take you to my room."
Camilo tried to usher me through the door but thankfully Mirabel appeared wide-eyed, "Camilo, leave. Y/N is here to hang out with me, she doesn't wanna talk to you." she inspected him nervously.
"Oh come on," he faced me, "You really don't want to hang out with me, I'm your friend too, I could give you some more dance lessons?"
"No, she doesn't want that, Camillo go away." Mirabel tried to shoo him away.
"You can't decide for her, let Y/N decide." he returned to himself and looked at me softly but amused, believing this all to be some joke, "Y/N, do you want me to leave you alone for the whole time you're here, in truth, you really don't want to hang out with me?"
I nodded my head, "Yes, Camilo, I don't want to hang out with you, please leave us alone for the whole time I'm here."
The small part of my heart that didn't believe what abuela and Mirabel told me wrenched as for a split-second, his expression morphed into sincere letdown but he tried to brush it off by shape-shifting into Pepa, "Aha, it's water under the bridge but if it were my mami in this position, there would be a tornado wrecking this whole village right now,"
Camilo sped off into the house and I heard him climb the stairs. Mirabel and I sighed, "That was close, Y/N. I think he's off the radar for now but we still need someone to keep watch tonight."
"Mirabel are you sure he has a death wish for me? I mean, he seemed genuinely upset about me not wanting to hang out with him." I peered into the empty space where the curly-haired boy once stood.
"Of course he seemed upset, he's a great actor, you should see the performances him and my tio Bruno put on," Mirabel ushered me successfully into the house, "Let's go to my room and we can begin work on your dress."
So we forgot about Camilo and made our way to the nursery, Mirabel had found some sheets and blankets to cover Antonio's old bed with, where I was supposed to sleep tonight, if I were ever gonna get any.
"There's one really important question that I can't believe I haven't asked you yet?" Mirabel stared at me expectantly in silence.
"... Go on."
She twiddled her thumbs, "What's your favorite color?"
I broadcasted a confused smile at the girl, "My favorite color? Why are you so nervous to ask that?"
"Because that's the type of question you ask a person as soon as you meet them, not days into the friendship."
"Is that really true?" I chuckled at the girl's lack of social experience.
