Camilo Madrigal; a member of the Madrigal family who can shapeshift into anyone he wants, collectively agreed to be mischievous, someone who likes to play pranks but people also know how much he cares, how much compassion resides in his heart for his family, for Encanto, and for people. I had the privilege of marrying him in the future, though he didn't know that, for now, I was going to take it slow and enjoy my time with him.
It was the day after the sleepover at the Madrigal's and my house's construction was fully complete. After begging my mami and papi they agreed to have a house-warming party as soon as we moved in.
Our home was a two-bedroom house like my tio's but our living space was much more spacious therefore we could invite lots of people.
After my parents agreed I sprinted around Encanto, on a mission to find the Madrigals and invite them all to my party, except Camilo who I was avoiding for a while but I'd already invited him the night before.
Then I went around the village telling random people about my party and they all seemed more than happy to come.
So there I was, in my room getting ready for the party while people filed in downstairs, I wanted to greet them but I struggled with the buttons on the back of my dress Mirabel made for me, the bottom ones were fine but the top button was in a space my feeble arms couldn't reach.
"Hola," Mirabel walked into my room and scanned it until her eyes landed on me then she turned around, "Sorry, I didn't realize you were still getting dressed, I'll leave."
"Wait Mirabel, it's fine, I'm fully clothed I just need help buttoning this last button at the top, my arms can't reach. I obviously love the dress you made for me and I'm very grateful, it's just a minor inconvenience."
Mirabel rotated back around and gulped, "Sure, I'll fasten it for you."
She walked over to me rather stiffly and quickly fastened the button, "there."
"Thanks," I fell onto my new bed and patted the space next to me for her to sit, "Come, sit down."
"Aren't we going down to the party? Your parents told me to bring you down," despite what she was saying, she sat down anyway.
"I'll come down in a minute, I just want to stay here first."
We sat side-by-side in comfortable silence for a few minutes before I decided to confess something to Mirabel, "Mirabel,"
No reply.
"Mirabel."
"Oh, right yeah that's me."
"Remember when I came over for dinner and we were in your room, I was about to tell you my feelings on your individual family members before Camilo interrupted." I wasn't facing her so I couldn't see the wide-eyed expression that grew on her face.
"Yes, I absolutely remember that." she nodded rapidly.
"And remember at the sleepover when I was telling you about the person I liked." I heard a nearly inaudible gasp emerge from her mouth.
"Yes, I absolutely remember that too." she nodded vigorously again, "how are these two things connected?"
"Well, I have a confession to make." we gazed at each other earnestly, "promise you won't get mad."
Mirabel was grinning, "I won't get mad, I promise."
"Okay well the person I have a crush on is someone very close to you."
Her smile grew, "Go on."
"The person I like is actually your cousin, Camilo."
Before my eyes Mirabel disappeared and in her place sat Camilo wearing a smirk.
"W-what, oh my." I scrambled to the head of my bed, all the air in my lungs had escaped.
"So, you have a crush on me." he gazed at me.
"No."
Camilo raised a brow, "You can't just deny it now, you clearly admitted your feelings for me."
"I can't say anything around your family, can I?"
"Nope," he shuffled closer to me, "Why are you so scared now that I know? What difference does it make?"
"Because it's about you! Everyone knows you don't just tell your crush you like them because what if they don't like you back," I was gulping the air back into my airways.
"And what if they do?"
"That's not the point," I tried to move further away but was met with my headboard, "It's just embarrassing okay, I'm embarrassed."
"Well don't be embarrassed."
"Easier said than done."
"Then we'll be embarrassed together."
"What do you mean?"
"I like you too."
That sentence hung in the air for far too long, building the tension, increasing the heat in my cheeks, our breaths became synced.
I was surprised when the next words came out of my mouth, "Can I kiss you?"
My question earned a shocked but eager nod from the boy in front of me
He was the only thing on my mind right now; I cupped his jaw and pulled him in, placing my lips on his.
It only lasted a second but it was a beautiful, life changing second that left the taste of sugar on my lips.
I watched as his face shifted from his own to his sister's to his brother's to his own bright red face again.
"They're listening right now aren't they?"
"Oh, definitely."
Regardless, I couldn't bring myself to care in that moment and used one arm to draw Camilo into a hug which he leaned into as he grabbed my spare hand with his own.
We were peaceful for a moment before my mami shouted up the stairs, "Y/N, the party was your idea, you can't miss out."
"Sorry mami, coming." I shouted back, "We'd best get going."
Camilo leaned out of the hug but my hand remained in his, "Will you at least give me a dance downstairs?"
"I would love nothing more," I sung our hands back and forth as we walked to the door.
In that moment I could've told him about Bruno's vision and our future together but some things are best left forgotten , for now.
