Gregory's watch made a little beep, which Pat copied. I stared at the little bot suspiciously.
"Gregory! I'm so glad that you're okay!" Freddy appeared out of seemingly nowhere to sweep the boy up in a big hug. When he remembered that I was there, he carefully put Gregory back on his feet and wrapped me tightly in his arms.
"You don't know how happy I am to see you." He sighed happily as I hooked my own arms around his shoulders just as tightly.
"I think I do."
"What happened to you? Where did you go?" He pulled back to inspect me. "You're covered in bruises and marks!"
"Uh, yeah. This bunny lady was in Monty's room. I think she hypnotised him or something because he was weird. And I mean more than usual. He trapped me and the bunny knocked me out with this thing on a rag. Probably something like chloroform. She must have gotten a few hits in while I was unconscious. I woke up here in the dark."
"See! I told you there was a bunny lady!" Gregory pointed at Freddy accusingly.
"I'm so sorry, superstar. It's not that I didn't believe you."
"You saw her too?"
"Only in the distance. It gave me a headache."
"Weird..." I muttered. "What about you two? Why aren't you in Freddy's room anymore?"
"Me and Pat got bored while Freddy went to look for you because he thought he heard you yelling. Which, I suppose he did actually hear. I thought it was a rat."
"We have rats here?"
"Probably." The boy shrugged, much to Freddy's annoyance. "And then Chica tried to attack me so we decided to try and find out what was going on with the other animatronics."
"Something really strange is happening here, and I don't much care for it." I crossed my arms.
"We shouldn't be standing in the open." Freddy looked around, fidgeting nervously. "Let's go back to my room and make a plan." Much to my surprise, the bear opened his front and allowed Gregory to clamber in.
"Is that safe?"
"You're the mechanic. You tell us." Gregory shot back, his voice muffled. I'd seen Freddy make some pretty large cakes fit in there while I was working the day shift. If they were alright, he should be fine. Right?
We got back to Freddy's room with little resistance from the patrolling S.T.A.F.F Bots and animatronics, though I still felt uneasy every time one of them intensely looked me up and down before ambling off to find Gregory. Thank the gods above that I kept my security badge in my pocket today instead of throwing it in my toolbox like usual.
"Have you guys ever been rebooted?"
"No, I don't believe we have." I hummed thoughtfully.
"I remember reading something about a system restart in one of those manuals. Maybe we could try rebooting them and it might kick out whatever is causing them to act like that."
"Wouldn't rebooting them make them, like, a blank slate?" Gregory piped up from the sofa, Pat on his lap like a pet cat. "Would they still be them?" Freddy and I glanced at each other, making brief eye contact.
"I... I don't know. But they attacked you. It would be better to have to reprogramme them than let anyone come into any harm. Who knows what could happen during the day when the Plex opens."
"It's true. They're my friends, and I want no harm to come to them. But sometimes, needs must. They'll understand."
"Okay, cool. So how do we reboot them, miss mechanic?" The boy asked. Pat squeaked, wiggling his ears excitedly.
