"Chica was in the kitchen last I saw." Gregory told us, his legs swinging as he perched on the arm on my sofa, cuddling one of my many plushies while Pat charged.
"How can we distract her for long enough?" Freddy leant forward thoughtfully. We'd decided that Chica would be the best person to start with.
"I found a letter." He waved his arms around excitedly. "It was talking about Monty's Mystery Mix and that Chica goes crazy over it!"
"It's true." I laughed. "The first time I ever interacted with Chica, I had some spilt on my apron. She just came charging at me from nowhere. I don't think she remembers that it was me, because she never brought it up again after." Freddy frowned.
"Is that why you were scared of us?"
"No. But it didn't help."
"You were scared of the animatronics?" Gregory raised an eyebrow.
"Terrified."
"Didn't you say that you spent time in the original pizzeria?" Freddy suddenly realised. "You said that you loved it there."
"I did." I responded quietly. "By the time the second opened up, I was old enough to realise why the first one was closed down." Freddy nodded knowingly, remembering the realisation I'd made before. "That frightened me enough and I refused to go to the new place, but... Well I had been talking to my brother about the original and he begged our dad to see the new one. New diner, new animatronics, no more danger... Right?" I gave a watery smile.
"Was he... killed in the diner?" Gregory pressed hesitantly.
"Just outside. He didn't want to leave and managed to get away from my dad as they walked home. He made it just outside, according to the CCTV. Him and a few others that had run ahead from their parents. And that was the last we ever saw of him. My dad... He never stopped blaming himself..." Something gentle touched my cheek. It was only then that I realised tears were running down my face. Freddy wiped them away with his thumbs, being careful with his cyan claws.
"Olive..." He muttered. I took a step back, scrubbing at my face with my sleeve and taking a deep breath.
"S-sorry. It's been forever since I spoke about it. I didn't mean for it to all spill out like that." Something wrapped around my waist. I put one hand in Gregory's messy brown hair and the other on his back.
"Why do you work here then?"
"Desperation. Adults have bills to pay, you know." Laughing dryly, I shrugged. "A friend worked here and promised that it was much better than the other few versions and she told me that nothing bad had ever happened in her year and a bit of working here. Other than Monty and Roxy's affinity for breaking things. 'But it's things, not humans' she'd said. She doesn't work here anymore, but she loved it here. And I'm glad that I gave it a chance."
"Why were you so scared? Because of your brother?" Freddy gestured for Gregory to stop asking questions, but I didn't really mind. It was actually pretty nice to talk about it for once.
"Yes and no. My brother frightened me away from the establishment. There was something else that made me wary of the animatronics..."
"What was it?" I glanced over at Freddy, who was watching me with pleading eyes, begging me not to tell him. Not that I would have anyway.
"I don't think it's something you should know. Maybe when you're older."
"Aw." The boy sighed.
"But aside from that, they're just very... Big. And strong. Monty glared at me once when he was in a rage and I almost cried."
