Purposely trying to show yourself to humans was discouraged. Humans jumped to conclusions and acted irrationally, often leading to banishment. Banishment itself wasn't particularly bad, but the punishments for it were. Dave's timbers were shivered thinking about the stories of shadows being subjected to light, a form of torture he never wished to endure. The thought of risking something like this scared him, but one look at her and the fear disappeared, the risk of punishment was worth it if it meant she would recognize him for even one moment.
As the sun began to rise, and she began to stir, he mustered all of the energy he could to make himself visible to the human eye. He only knew how to do this for a few seconds and if he missed the opportunity he didn't know when he could do it again. He waited with anticipation until the moment felt right and then he revealed his shadow form to her. He watched as she did a double take and rub her eyes to make sure she saw it correctly. Dave was giddy with excitement, and the best part was, she wasn't even scared. Perhaps it was truly meant to be.
