Dark Red- Steve Lacy
Omniscient"What you mean by that E?"
Ephesia shook her head. Messiah's eyes brows came together in a deep furrow."Nothing. No, I don't mean I don't want the baby. I'm just sorry it had to happen like this."
Ephesia didn't know what she meant. Maybe she didn't want the baby. What could she possibly do with a baby at this time in her life."Ephesia baby— look. It's your choice. Right now— in this predicament, I really don't have a say in what you do. What can I do for this child behind bars?"
Messiah was overjoyed with the thought of Ephesia having his child, but he wouldn't get the chance to enjoy this journey with her, his soul mate.Ephesia nodded, now feeling nauseous. You know that feeling when the elevator jolts just before stopping? Imagine that but multiplied by 10. A warm tear ran down her cheek. Her feelings were everywhere. She had no idea how to feel. Even if she did, she had no idea how to express them. Messiah saw her discomfort.
"Ephesia baby, please try to relax. We are going to get through this, we always do baby."
His hand caressed hers gently. Their eyes met, and Ephesia couldn't help but to start balling her eyes out.She had been holding on to her feeling for so long. But the baby, Messiah, jail, stress, school,
work. It was way too much for her. Inside,
she was still a fragile little girl, still trying to understand why it seemed no one wanted her. She felt so hopeless."Messiah-"
She couldn't even finish her sentence before more tears began to fall."It's okay baby."
Messiah stared at her. She was beautiful even while being a crying, snotty mess. Finally calming herself, they sat in silence.
"I love you."
She sighed."I love you more."
He squeezed her hand. She nodded, their visitation time was coming to an end.
"Whatever you do, I'll understand."
He placed a kiss on her hand before he was led away from their table.•••••••
"Elijah, you'll never believe it."
Messiah ran up to his brother in the Rec yard."Wassup bruh."
They hugged before Elijah encouraged his baby brother to speak up."E pregnant man."
A smirk tugged at the end of Elijah's mouth. It was nasty smirk. The one someone has when they're about to say something they know will ruin your whole day."I'll be a father man. And you'll get that nephew you're always complaining about never getting."
Elijah was about wipe that smile off of Messiah's face."You know I'd never tell you wrong, right?"
Elijah patted Messiah's shoulder.Messiah's whole mood shifted.
"What you trying to say man?"
Elijah just laughed."That baby ain't yours. Remember that phone call that had you tripping? You had right to be. That night at the club Ephesia was telling me all about how she was fucking him and how you was just mad that you wasn't the only one with hoes."
Messiah stood there shocked. Elijah smiled. He didn't want to ruin his brother's life, but he was going to. But it hadn't started there. There was no 5 years apiece. Elijah took a plea deal. He only had to serve a year and a half.
With his brother inside the pen for an extra 3 and a half years, plus him having nothing to live for now— meant he could take over their business on the outside once he was out.
Messiah believed him. That was his first mistake. Blood ain't always thicker than water.
•••••••It had been two months since Ephesia's visit. And it was the last time she had spoken to him. He hadn't called her at all. If so unlike him. She was praying he was okay.
She was now 5 months pregnant. And her baby was growing everyday. The doctor told her it wasn't good for her to be stressing while she was and carrying a baby to term, but she couldn't help it.
It also didn't help that she a high risk pregnancy.Even if she tried to get her mind off of him for a while she was never able to do so. She always found herself thinking of the worse possible scenarios. But what was about to happen would be the worst, and it was much more real than a fake little scenario she had made up in her head.
Jocelyn and Epeshia sat in her sun room, watching Real Housewives of Potomac. Jocelyn had gotten the mail earlier, she was staying with Ephesia for a while to help her out with this pregnancy.
"Ephesia guess who wrote you, finally."
Jocelyn wove the envelope in her hand.Ephesia's eye widened with excitement.
"Open it, open it! No just hand it here. "
Jocelyn handed her the envelope and watched with amusement as she hurried to open the envelope. There was a glint of happiness in Ephesia's eyes, but it died as she read rather and rather into the letter. Her eyes watered as the letter came to an end. Jocelyn ripped the letter from her hands.
"Thats enough. "
She tossed the letter across the room, it had obviously upset her and that wasn't good— especially with a baby inside of her. She was a high risk pregnancy after all.Ephesia stared at the TV, a blank expression in her eyes. Her hands shook rapidly. As the stress had been building up over these past two months. Messiah's letter had now sent her brain into over drive. She used every molecule of energy to try to understand him, make sense of his letter. Hoping it was just a mistake at the post office. But it was his hands writing, her name used multiple times in the letter— addressing her directly.
There was no mistake as she continued to stress her body out even more, hoping to wake up from this horrible dream. It was no dream.
"Ephesia what's wrong? Is he okay? Tell
me something, please."
Ephesia shook her head, still saying nothing."He says that the baby isn't his. He said that Elijah told him the truth and to not even message him back. He said he's done with me— oh fuck."
There was a sudden stabbing pain in her abdomen."Ephesia!"
Jocelyn yelled as she saw red seep through Ephesia's grey sweatpants. The room was spinning as Ephesia felt every feeling of pain there is rip through her body. And then it all went black.
