Soul Enthralling;

In the night, Chen Ming was like a night owl, sitting cross-legged on the bed and keeping his eyes wide open. No one could see his exhaustion after a busy day.

“Who are you waiting for?” Zhou Nan leaned over and asked curiously.

Chen Ming didn’t answer but said, “Here he is.”

At this time, it was mysterious that the candlelight on the long table started to flicker although there was no wind. Twenty-four glass bottles on the other table trembled violently, as if they could feel someone was about to appear unexpectedly.

Zhou Nan still wanted to make it clear, but suddenly, there appeared a curved hook a few millimeters from his chest , the sharp tip of which nearly pressed his throat.

He almost couldn’t breath, and then a low voice sounded in his ear, “Thou, why did you escape?”

Zhou Nan couldn’t utter any word. His silence seemed to have angered the speaker. Suddenly, a strong wind from behind blew out all the candles. His legs became limp again, but he held on hard, preventing himself from falling down. If he fell, he would press against the tip of the hook. Then it would hurt a lot even if he was not killed.

“Alas, can you stay away from my candles?” Chen Ming gazed behind Zhou Nan, his eyes full of disdain.

Zhou Nan was not like Chen Ming who was able to chat with anyone. He dared not go out and listened to the speaker, “You are so audacious to let a ghost wander outside, Chen Ming.”

“What are you afraid of? He’s a terrified ghost. He dares not do anything.” Chen Ming waved his hand calmly, “What’s more, I don’t have a bottle anymore, and I can’t break up the spirits like others.”

The iron hook on the neck was a little farther away and then Zhou Nan found a pair of long and narrow dead fish eyes staring at him. Unexpectedly, a long sleeve waved and the hook disappeared. Zhou Nan turned around and stepped back. Then he sat on the ground with a “plop”.

He retreated as quickly as possible and finally had a chance to take a good look at the person who showed strong hostility to him. The white flowing robe and the unusually strange long tongue seemed quite striking.

“Chen Ming … who is this?”

“Guardian of hell, Bai Wuchang.”

The last three words echoed in Zhou Nan’s head and left him in a daze. He said with a dull look, “Hello, Mr. Bai.”

Chen Ming sat up a little straighter and said to Bai Wuchang, “Tell me. Has this young fellow come to the end of his life?”

Bai Wuchang looked down and carefully examined for a moment before saying coldly, “There’s still one month left.”

One month left?

Zhou Nan really didn’t know whether he should be happy or sad. Although he turned out to be alive,  there was not much time left anyway. Zhou Nan felt strangled by an invisible hand grabbing his heart.

“Got it.” Chen Ming indifferently pointed to the long table with the glass bottles on it, “Go and see whose time is up and take him back to the underworld.”

Bai Wuchang floated to the table. The two bottles with their lids at the bottom were turned over by a kind of unknown power. Then a translucent black mist emerged, gradually forming a pair of vague figures behind him.

The iron hook that had nearly frightened Zhou Nan to death stretched from Bai Wuchang’s cuff and split into two parts before suddenly embedding in the chests of two black shadows, firmly and deeply.

Zhou Nan felt the pain in the chest just as if he himself had been attacked. He couldn’t understand why Bai Wuchang could be so violent.

The two black figures bowed in pain, but they could not make a sound. They shook and followed Bai Wuchang through the wall.

“Merit will be remembered for you.” This was the last sentence left by Bai Wuchang, hollow and elusive. On the table, the empty glass bottles tilted, and the ones with the lids at the bottom did not tremble any more. Everything returned to calm. Only the grinding sound of the chains and the iron bone still vaguely echoed in the ear.

Zhou Nan looked at Chen Ming while Chen Ming looked at the hangnail on his fingers.

“Merit?”

“My salary.” He was still not used to seeing the dead skin, but he didn’t bother to take the nail knife, so he tried to tear it. “Should I burn the ghost money to play?”

“Then…” Zhou Nan was very confused and had too many questions. “Geomancer? Taoist? What should I call you?”

“If you can,” said Chen Ming, who tore the annoying thing off, grinned in pain, “You can call me ghostbuster.”
