45. Gui Da Qiang
Zhou Nan floated up
and down the street, looking into each taxi he saw. It was faster for a ghost
to look for a person than a human being. Nevertheless, he didn’t find the one he was
looking for and was disappointed again and again.
To find a person in the street was like looking for a
needle in the sea. It was hard.
Soon, it was getting dark, and the street lamps gave off orange light. Zhou Nan was powerless and depressed, sitting
down with his head down. He was worried he could
not save the driver timely.
“Where are you?”
Suddenly, he felt
something poking him. Turning around, he saw the little paper man with a
grievous face. It held a small tree branch with his fingerless hands and was
drawing something on a small patch of sand field.
When it was halfway
writing, a man passed by, and it quickly lay down to play dead. However, it
chose a lousy position, and the man trampled it. After getting up, it
looked at Zhou Nan with the same “QAQ” expression and a footprint,
looking funny.
Zhou Nan was amused. The
paper man knew he was sullen and did this to cheer him up.
The tearful paper man
picked up the branch to finish its writing.
Half a minute later, it finished, and Zhou Nan realized
Chen Ming was trying to tell him the plate number of the taxi.
Now, Zhou Nan no longer
needed to check the taxi windows and the task would be easier.
Zhou Nan cheered up and
floated across the streets to examine each car plate. No matter how dim his
hope was, he would not give up.
The little paper man
grabbed the corner of Zhou Nan’s coat and flipped in the wind like a piece of
paper.
Around midnight, he caught a glimpse of a taxi driving out of the main road towards the boulevard. The
license plate was the one Chen Ming
asked the little paper man to write.
“That’s it?” Zhou Nan was afraid
that he might be mistaken and looked down at the little paper man.
Its
“QAQ” face was
nodding rapidly.
Zhou Nan rushed
forward and saw the “empty car” sign on the window.
OK, only the driver.
A few hours ago, when he
was about to go out, Chen Ming stopped him.
The man who often wore a
teasing face became unusually severe, and stressed, ” Ghosts are nothing
but consciousness. When powerful enough,
they could choose to be concrete or vague and could affect the
consciousness of others. There are many examples like Gui Da Qiang(the ghosts can build virtual walls to misguide men).”
Zhou Nan knew how he
planned-it would be nice to buy time using Gui Da Qiang until Chen
Ming came over. But…
“I… don’t know how to
do it. I might lose control and become a fierce ghost.
“It’s simple. Keep
thinking that you want the driver to stay. If you mean no harm, you
wouldn’t turn to a fierce ghost.” Chen Ming didn’t wait for Zhou
Nan to refute and turned around, saying, “I trust you.”
When Zhou Nan finished
recalling, the reality was ahead.
‘Stay, we’re trying to help you.’ Zhou Nan attempted to think
this way.
Suddenly, the car turned
sharply and rushed to a tree.
Look out!
But the car dodged easily.
The rearview mirror scratched onto the tree trunk and made a harsh sound.
Zhou Nan’s heart was
palpitating, and at the same time, he thought of an inappropriate word: hearse
drifting.
The drive looked calm the whole time and didn’t seem to realize that he had just had a narrow escape.
Zhou Nan knew this
was what Chen Ming had talked about, and that consciousness had worked. To save the
driver’s life, he had to think about more details.
He tried to help the driver
avoid the trees in the woods and drive in circles. It worked well: a few
minutes later, there were tracks on the ground.
The little paper man stood
silently on the shoulder of Zhou Nan and watched the driver driving
in circles on the mountainside.
The light beams from the
car changed with its route, making Zhou Nan
perturbed.
Zhou Nan dared not look away or think of anything else. He was afraid that his negligence would make
things worse and was more fearful of failing Chen Ming who said “I trust you.”
This place was not far
from the florist, and if Chen Ming hurried up, it would take him less than half
an hour. Then everything would be settled when he arrived.
We he thought about it, the
little paper man on his shoulder suddenly fell like a piece of ordinary paper.
“Chen
Ming?” Zhou Nan was puzzled. When he looked sideways, an
unwelcome guest came from the other side in the blink of an eye.
A woman’s cold voice came from behind: ” You dirty
thing! You should’ve been sent to the underworld.”
