81. Life-Saving Candle Fire
While Chen Ming was trapped in the mountain forest, Zhou Nan was also having a hard time.
In order to divert attention and reduce panic, he began to count and read in the kind of voice that made him look like a giant baby with mental retardation. But while he was counting, a slight sound suddenly came from the coffin in front of him.
Zhou Nan thought he had an illusion. He shut his mouth immediately and listened carefully.
There was all silence for a while, and then the strange sound came back, as if something was scratching the boards from the inside.
Zhou Nan’s hair stood on end. He looked down at the candle immediately. The light smoke floated straight up, and the three small flames were burning smoothly, without any sign of extinguishing.
Of course he believed in Chen Ming. As long as he kept the candle fire on, it could guarantee his safety. He also consoled himself by saying that as long as the candle fire was not out, the ghosts couldn’t be here. As for that sound, perhaps a sleepy mouse got sealed into the coffin accidentally, and now it woke up, so it was just struggling to get out.
While he was thinking, the scratching sound went louder, and the movement was so big that even the heavy coffin was shaking.
“Big, big rat? Yes.. It must be a big rat, so that’s why it’s so loud!” Zhou Nan consoled himself repeatedly, while he was slipping off the cushion and his butt was on the cold floor.
At that moment, the light bulb went out with a sound of “poof”. One second later, those three small candles in front of him were the only light source left, and the coffin in the distance was mostly hidden in the shadow, with just a corner showing in the dim light.
Zhou Nan wrapped the cushion in his arms with his nails pressed into it. People who were frightened always tended to catch something for safety, which was exactly the same case for Zhou Nan. But although he was afraid, he still clearly remembered to keep the candle on, so he did not back away at all.
“As long as the candlelight is not out…”
However, the iron door of the bungalow was suddenly blown open by an eerie wind, and it was slammed against the wall heavily with an extremely loud sound. Zhou Nan saw the candle fire flicking in the wind, and it was about to die out. He didn’t think much, and immediately jumped on it and covered it with his hands.
One of the three had been out, and only two were still barely surviving. With the wind blowing, the fire became short and small, and it went dim too. The “rat” in the coffin was still struggling, as if it wanted to dig a big hole in the golden sandalwood.
“Hold on, little flame!” This boy who had never dared to walk alone at night, was almost scared into crying. He dared not let go of the last two “life-saving straws” and stared at the candle fire so fixedly that he started to feel tingling pain in his eyes.
Fortunately, a few seconds later, things went a little more smoothly. The wind stopped and the “rat” calmed down.
Zhou Nan finally sighed with relief and started to think that Chen Ming was indeed right in saying that he still had to rely on the candle fire to save the day. He straightened up, raised his hand and wiped the cold sweat off. His ears were filled with the sound of his heartbeat.
However, the energy-saving lamp still did not work. Zhou Nan had to huddle up in this small corner, trembling.
Would the wind come again?
He didn’t know.
Maybe he should close the door to prevent the wind from blowing in.
Zhou Nan hesitated about going into the darkness and reached the door. He swallowed before finally deciding to go. He held the cushion and took a walk in the direction.
Not sure if it was persecutory delusions, Zhou Nan felt that someone was following him. But he didn’t dare to look back, because he was afraid to see something too frightening, like those scenes that appeared in too many horror movies and games.
Just like that, Zhou Nan successfully walked to the door and closed it. He looked at his faint shadow and began to think about how to retreat to the candle fire. He didn’t care if the posture was funny, because no one was there to laugh at him anyway.
As his shadow became clearer, Zhou Nan knew that he was getting closer to the candles and breathed a sigh of relief.
He began to grope and prepared to sit down, “It’s all right, Zhou Nan, it’s alright, it’s alright…”
Just as he spoke, the candle fire flashed suddenly and the whole room was in complete darkness.
