The pounding of my feet on the treadmill is truly comforting and I'm releasing all my stress now. The sound around the gym is giving me the energy to keep running. The hammering of my heart is telling me that I'm still alive. I'm running even though I can't feel my legs now.
My speed increases, as I think about me, my family and most importantly my marriage. My heart is heavy just by thinking of that. My breath begins to become labored as my run turns to sprint. Sweat is pouring down my bare chest as I watch the clock across the gym. Come on, you can do it. Keep another two more minutes.
Yet when the machine automatically slows down, my legs refuse to stop. I smack the increase button, my ego refusing to stop just yet. One more mile. I can do this. Glancing down at the screen on the machine, I note my distance. 20 miles. I'm done for now.
"Well, you did it faster yesterday. Too bad, you're getting weaker day to day, man," Bucky said
My feet slow to a stop and I brace my hands on the handle, dropping my head while I work to level out my breathing. "Shut up," I manage to wheeze, turning my face to one of my oldest friend. He's also a co-worker of mine.
Stepping down the treadmill, I wipe my soaked chest before shoving the towel back at him. I make my way to the water cooler; Bucky follows me behind.
"So, how's your preparation for the wedding? It's just next week. We need to get ready your suit, hair stylish, cake.. Oh, before that, how could you choose Wilson be your best man over me? I thought i was your..,"
"Stop, just stop all this shit" I interrupt him. Anger and frustration rises in me. I'm not really into all this marriage stuff. I just agree this to shut my old man's mouth.
"Steve, you can't be like this forever. This is your father's drea..,"
"I told you to shut up," I yell, swinging and crashing some wine bottles on the cabinet. "He's not my father. Don't you dare tell that old man my father," I said, as Bucky stepped behind with fear.
"I'm sorry, Steve. Hey, I don't mean to say that but you can't be like this forever," Bucky tries to convince me but nothing can change my ego.
"I have survived for 28 years, Buck," I said. "I can do by myself, I can survive by my own. I don't need any so called father, or any wife," I continue, feeling furious about the planned wedding.
As we were talking, the gym door flies open. "Hey honey,"Dilleta says. I nod as i acknowledge her. She is the woman I spend my 5 years with. Not for love, just pleasure and to release my frustration. If she's gonna fall for me, then she must be in trouble.
She came near to me and kisses me. "Wanna spend the day with me, greek god?,"
I sigh. "I need the morning reports and the unit reports on my table before lunch. Do it now," I instruct Bucky.
"Yes, Cap." Bucky said
I grab Dilleta's hand and moves out of the gym.
"So, heard you're getting married? Are you?," she's provoking me.
"You don't need to know about that. It's not your business," I said without looking at her.
She releases her hand from my hard grip and fist her hand on my shirt. "Hey, listen. You're mine. I won't let any women to be in your life. You got me? I mean what I said," she pulls me closer. "I don't mind hurting them,"
I push her hand away and dust myself. "I don't belong to anyone. No one owns me. So, if you think I'm yours, then you may go to hell," I turn my back and walks away.
I headed to my Aston Martin behind the gym and throw myself in the driver seat. I press the engine but my eyes falls on the envelope cover at the passengers seat. I grab the cover and opens it. It's a picture of a girl, a very simple girl. A very innocent girl. The girl, that is pledged to married. With me. That is my first sight of her.
At that moment I realize, I'm not right for her.
