Chapter 27 | detectives mind

Thank god that gut feeling L had told him to check up on you, because as soon as he went down to the gateway and over to the riverbank he was met with one hell of a story from you.

The second he heard the word murder, it was like his detective instincts went off and the second you told him everything that happened he wanted to see this all for himself. So it was back to the crime scene you went.

The bodies had been taken for autopsy, but the boat was still sunken at the bottom of the sea. Due to be recovered in the next few weeks when a crew can come out to get it. So everything was just as you found it at the bottom of the ocean.

"Are you sure about this? It's dark as hell down here at night" you asked.

"I have to see this. You can't just tell me there's been a murder and expect me not to be interested" L replied, pulling his shirt off and picking up the waterproof flashlight from his boat.

"Well this is the world's greatest detective we're talking about, I guess I should have known"

L was known for only taking cases that are challenging and he finds interesting. So a case where the crime scene is not only underwater, but in a world of magic, he had to see. Thanks to the necklace you'd given him, he didn't need any dive equipment and could breathe underwater for this dive. Jumping in and taking your hand he turned on the flashlight and had you lead him down to the wreck.

You weren't lying when you said it was dark, because it was haunting how the flashlight pierced the pitch black void of water. The wreck looked just as you'd described, apart from the hole in the hull and the dents in the doors you made, it looks just someone just took a brand new boat and put it in the sand.

He'd never investigated an underwater crime scene before, so this was thrilling to him. He'd seen many crime scenes in his day, but never one where the evidence is floating in the water that filled the cabins of the boat. No blood stains or any guts on the walls like the typical murder on land, but everything soaked.

Entering the wreck, he shined the light around the cabin scanning for anything suspicious. If he wasn't intrigued before he was now, in full detective mode. He was meant to be on a break from cases, but this one was just too good to pass up. And it being in another world entirely meant he could still take breaks when he was at home.

You and L looked around through the dark void of the water, seeing all the belongings of the victims floating around. There'd likely be no fingerprints since they'd been sitting underwater for so long, but L was still careful to only touch things by the corner to not contaminate anything.

But everything looked normal, books, clothes, food containers etc. all normal things that everyone had, nothing seemed suspicious. It didn't look like anything had been bought in by an intruder or anything.

Now that the bodies were gone and you didn't get the shock of your life seeing them, you could look through the wreck more throughly like you intended. Peering into each corner and under every surface you looked through the boat. You'd seen alot of wrecks in your life as a siren, and it seemed like a totally normal vessel. It hadn't been sunk long enough to rust or have barnacles growing on it, it didn't have any suspicious items on it, it just seemed so normal.

So what the hell happened here?

You and L swum throughout the whole wreck looking for anything suspicious, and found nothing. The only suspicious thing was the hole in the hull, which L had decided to check out more throughly.

Swimming into the hole and shining the light around the inside of the hull, he inspected the breakage and seemed to be drawing out theories in his head. On the inside of the hull, at the top where the floor of the deck would be, there was a sealed area where the engine would  be, and with the ship sunk and full of water you figured nothing would change if you opened it to take a look.

It was a little hard to see, with L having the light. But you were a siren, and you can see rather well in the dark. Poking around at the engine, you looked for anything suspicious. And finally, you found something.

There was a gap, right in the middle. Something in the engine had been taken out. Tapping L's shoulder for his attention, he turned to face you and you pointed at the engine. He shone his light on it, and you got a better look at it. Sure enough, it'd clearly been tampered with. So not only was there a hole in the hull but a faulty engine, all the doors were locked and jammed when the boat sunk and the victims likely drowned.

When you broke back up to the surface and got in L's boat, you both already had ideas about what likely happened.

"This is the strangest crime scene I've ever looked at" L said, squeezing the water from his hair.

"Clearly there's some kind of foul play here. I mean an engine part missing and a hole in the hull?" You replied.

"That hole... it looked like it'd been broken off rather than cleanly sawed off. I think the hole was originally smaller and less noticeable and probably done on purpose, and as the boat filled with water the pressure made it break open even more. The engine probably was tampered with through the access trapdoor on the deck"

"Meaning whoever did this found a way into the boat while it was docked, tampered with it and when the victims took it out and it inevitably started sinking there's be no sign of anyone else on the boat at the time but them"

"And I bet the locks were tampered with too, although I can't say for sure unless we have some kind of proof they'd been replaced or broken recently"

The picture was slowly starting to come together, and it was clear L's knowledge as a such a good detective would be invaluable to the case. I'm just one dive thanks to a bit of siren help he'd already found how the hull broke, and that the engine was tampered with.

Maybe it'd be worth getting him in on this case with the coast guard and police? He'd definitely be able to solve something like this, even if it was a weird situation.

"When they identify the victims, let me know. I want to do some investigating on this" he said.

"Sure thing, but aren't you meant to be on break from cases to watch the boys?" You replied.

"Yeah, but since I only come here at night I can separate my life here from my one at home. In the day I'm just a babysitter on a break. At night I'm helping you solve this, it's too interesting to pass up"

You knew he'd want to help, he was into all this stuff anyway. Taking his two favourite things, magic and solving crimes and putting them together was bound to get him intrested.

"Alright, you'll be a lot of help away. Just make sure you give those sweet kids as much attention as you're giving me and the case" you replied, placing a kiss on his cheek.

He was still getting used to the whole boyfriend thing, so that gentle kiss made him a little flustered. It was always so cute seeing him blush.

"O-of course. I love the boys as much as I love solving crimes and magic... and you" he replied.

"Aw, you love me?" You teased.

"Maybe..." he teased back, still flustered.

You gave him the classic siren giggle, that always made his heart skip a beat.

"I love you too, sweetheart"
